If unlimited means infinite, we have a problem.
By storing all satellites and many bouquets, I managed to crash the machine twice for lack of memory.
I had to reintroduce an image through RS232. All that time consuming work lost.

If he were not a wizard, from head down to the root, you would have got to worry-your DB only boots

How many satellites have you scanned?

I suggest only creating your own bouquets from sats you've scanned rather than uploading huge channel lists (if that's what you did?).

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
I scanned Astra, Hotbird, Sirius, Thor, Badr and Nilesat. Then I made a few bouquets.
I have to mention though that my programs include Cccam 2.0.4 and Flexmenu.
Cheers

Thats not excessive. Ive got a 7020 and have Astra 1 Astra 2 Astra 3 Hotbird Eurobird 9 Sirius and a couple of other scanned in, with a dozen or so bouquets.

Try increasing the swap file size - it gives the box extra memory to run in - I sometimes find mine gets crash happy for no reason for a few days then it settles down again.

Remember a DB is just a computer and strange things start to happen to computers when they run out of memory.

Which image version are you using ?
Do you use a USB flash memory stick ?

Not Knowing how to use a swap on my HD, I have now formatted and installed a CF with 48MB and a 512 MB USB stick.
I am about to start figuring out how to put the Gemini image on the flash and the Var on the USB. I do not need a multiboot. Which Gemini version would work faultlessly here. I do use Cccam 2.0.4 and Flexmenu.
Thank you all for your input.

Thank you all for your input.
Pull out the CF and the USB stick after shutdown.
I think that later on you can be happy with just the USB stick.
Disconnect all cables including the LNB coax and the ethernet.
Shutdown Dreambox and PC, then connect JUST the null modem cable between them.
I tried last week Gemini 4.1 but the box went dead after the flash so I can only recommend Gemini 4.0 (seeing that you have 7000S)
After the flash, scan channels and then after shutdown, insert the USB stick and follow this thread in order to move the /var to the USB stick:

Good Luck

It worked fine because of your detailed instructions.
I also opened a swap file on the HD, just in case.
However, because I am using now the Gemini 4.0, I had to reformat the Hard Disc, so that the system recognises it as a functional mount. Perhaps this is normal.
Thanks again

I am glad that your box is OK now.
It is rather strange that Gemini 4.1 gave us both problems.
My 7000S is the old version with blue LCD. Do you have also a blue LCD or amber?
There is a new post in the Portugese section about Gemini 4.10 running with 600 PVR and it seems to be OK.
http://www.satellites.co.uk/satellit...-dm600pvr.html
Are you using the CF card?
What is the purpose of creating the swap file on the HD?

I see from your profile that you have a 2.5" HDD.
Please give size and model number.
Do you have smooth recordings without pixelization on all channels?

My 7000S is the newer version with amber LCD.
I removed the CF card.

A swap file on the HD helps when your local dreambox memory is reduced.
Without a swap file, the receiver becomes erratic. This is what I wanted to do before and I did not know how. This would probably have helped. But now I was able to put it so I did, for the exercise. The var file is the one that expands on a dreambox, and with 512 MB, I sure will not need the swap file.

The HDD is a HITACHI HTS541680J9AT00 80 GIGA 8MB CACHE 5400RPM It works perfectly well.
I selected it because it is virtually noiseless and has very low power requirements.

Thanks for the info.
I thought of changing the 3.5" HDD to 2.5" because I was getting pixilization on some channels.
But I needed a special adapter, so I still have the same HDD.
The dish size in my location can be from 1.2m, but I wanted a bigger dish so as to have less problems as a result of the weather.

My System: Dreambox 500, Dreambox 600PVR, Dreambox 7025+, Dreambox 7000, 1m dish on a Moteck SG2100

I am using gemini 4.1 on both a 7000s and a 600pvr without problems.
The 7000s has a usb stick for holding images with flashwizard and I have not moved the var folder.

I was tempted to move from the USB to a CF card but the last time I tried it I had to reformat my hard drive so it would see it again losing all my recorded films.

Hello BonceChops,
Does your 7000S has a blue LCD (older model) or amber LCD?
Mine has a blue LCD and I am trying to see if this problem with Gemini 4.1 has any correlation to the LCD type. Thanks.

no. because mines the amber LCD and it hates 4.1

4.1 on a 7000s is no good installed into the flash memory. USB stick, CF or HD multiboot seem to be ok

i would advice any 7000 owner to avoid ver 4.1 of Gemini, too many people are having problems, they cant all be wrong.

Hi,

The USB stick works fine.
But it sticks out at the back so could be easily broken while cleaning.
As a result I have three unusable sticks now.
I thought using a CF instead as it is well hidden inside the Dreambox.
Is it possible to put var on the compact flash?
If it is possible, how does it compare in speed to the USB?
Any objection to this way of doing since I have not seen this method used.

@ HB13DISH
You were able to advise on the matter earlier, do you have any suggestion?

Thanks all for any help.

Get a short (50cm or so) usb extension cable - they can be had very cheaply. Then plug that into the back of the DB & put the stick in the end of the extension . You can get fairly small footprint extension cables which wont stick out too far.

I use this method - so I can easily swap the usb sticks around if I want to without ferreting around in the dust at the back of the box.

USB stick is a lot cheaper than CF.
Also I read that there were many problems with CF.
It's your choice.

I think that in addition to Analoguesat's suggestion, you can also consider using a USB 4-Port Hub and stick the USB flash and also a USB keyborad.
And you still have two more ports to use. They are very cheap. USB 1.1 standard is good enough.
This is what I have actually.

Unless I have to reload the 4.0 Enigma image.
The USB outlet seems to have died.
The "format USB stick" does not appear anymore.
I can see that you use the gemini 4.3.

I used 4.0 before and it was fine for the USB flash.
Could this be due to what you mentioned earlier about damaging your sticks?
If you have the time, then try flashing the latest Gemini image.
Good Luck.

Just tweaked mechanically the USB port and everything in order now.
I did not have to buy any hub or extensions, as I have plenty of those.
I shall now reprogram my var, and that is a lot of work.
I shall leave the 4.3 for later.
Thank you again.

I use a cheapish cf card in my 7020 no bother - ita 1 gig Kingston card from the local tesco.

I use it for multibooting when I fancy a change of image or want to try a new one, although Im tending to stick with Gem 4.2 as Ive got it set up more or less how I like it atm.

(I dont have a hdd in my db yet)

Good.
See if this can help you with the var

BTW - be careful if you use satankeyupdater - the version I have trashes the image if it cant connect to the server for any reason.

I found that out the hard way several times over Christmas.... And with 7 lnb's the reconfiguration was a nightmare
