Comms setup!

Hi there, moved this to a new thread, dont think nobody noticed this in an existing thread with someone who has the same problem.

Ive had my 7020Si for a number of months and been using it as it came out of the box. I now have some time to get it working as it should be I have gone through the idiots guide in particular the thread written up by MHKU on the comms setup, I must be missing something some where.

Setup:
Dreambox 7020 Si
Motorised dish - Eurobird, Astra, Hotbird, Eutelsat, Turksat etc (all channels working)
Enigma image, not sure what version though

Laptop settings
IP Address 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.2.1

Dreambox Settings
Ip Address 192.168.2.23 (DCHP unticked)
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Type LAN
Nameserver 192.168.2.1
Gateway 192.168.2.1
Networking enabled

I have changed the default settings on the dreambox through the communication setup menu, as explained within the idiots guide. The new settings remain after several reboots, however, when I hold the front button down upon startup I do not get an IP address, it just reads DCHP on the front panel, although this has been unchecked within the communication setup menu?

I have tried connecting to the box through a number of apps but no joy? Any ideas?

Comms methods tried (directly via laptop through ethernet cable to Dreambox, PS I know that the cable works!)
1) Ping from Laptop to Dreambox via command prompt on laptop, timeout.
2) Connecting through IE by specifying the IP address of the Dreambox, cannot find server.
3) Wanted to save the channels before I done anything so I created a new profile within DreamBoxEdit app and specifedthe ip address of the dreambox and using port 80, connection failure

Looks fine to me mate.

When You are done in the comm setup there is a Get MAc adress !

Do that and save.

When You start the box and hold down the button You should get the IP of the box.

Just make sure that You fix the Mac adress

Hi dig deep, I've gone into the Ngrab server and tried to detect the MAC adress with the default Srv IP but failed, asked me to check the IP address. I changed the Srv IP to reflect that of the dreambox (192.168.2.23), now the detect Mac Adress command does nothing??? the Srv Port is 4000 with the Srv MAC showing all zero's, do I need to change these?

The network settings look to be correct.

You say the cable is ok, but are you sure its the correct cable?

For a direct connection between the laptop and the Dreambox, you should be using a crossover cable.

If you are connecting through a switch,hub,router (which seems to be the case judging by your settings) you should be using a patch lead.

I suggest that you enable DHCP on the dreambox while connected via your router, let it get the correct settings automatically. Then check what settings were recieved in the comms setup window. Use these settings to test connection with DreamboxEdit or whatever.

Then if you want to, you can disable DHCP and change the last octet of the IP to whatever you want. eg 192.168.1.23

The server IP is always the same In Your setup it should be 192.168.1.1 ?

What router do You use ? Set the box to 192.168.1.5 and try to detect the mac. Without a good Macaddy You will never make it run.

Usually the IP of a router is 192.168.1.1 Check that up

When I re-read this I noticed that You are connected only by a laptop ?

Is that correct ?

I assumed that You where using a router. If not, then I must withdraw my last post

Hi Guys, yes I am trying to communicate with my dreambox via my laptop, no router involved. My router is upstairs where the standalone PC is located. My laptop has wireless access to the net which I hope to utilise later to download keys etc. It would be a bit of pain to keep luggin my dreambox upstairs and connect it to the router each time I want to download keys etc... If it is not possible to access the net via the wireless laptop access then I will configure the dreambox to connect to my router upstairs?

What method would you recommend, I prefer the laptop route if possible

With regards to the network cable I have a feeling that this is a standard patch cable, will hunt around for a crossover cable and try this, will google it to find out how to spot the difference!

So I take it that the settings within the NGRAB section are to configure connectivity via a router?

It needs to be a crossover cable.

You will probably need to setup ICS on your laptop of you want to give the Dreambox internet access. Or try a wireless dongle ((I can't remember if this works with a Dreambox).

If You really want to use the dreambox then it is almost mandatory to have it online.

Seeing that you are connected to the internet, It would be a shame not to have an always on connection for the the Dreambox too.

Bit of a delayed response, got side tracked with other stuff... Got hold of a cross over cable and looks to have worked! Can ping the Dreambox now, having problems with dreamboxedit pulling the channel list off the box (keeps crashing) so will use another program for that.

Stage one completed, communication established with the box, I think late night forum trawling is on the agenda for a while... Thanks all!
