Watching BBC HD (28.2E) on PC with VLC

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had any success trying to watch BBC HD on their PC using VLC from a DM7020-s?

VLC keeps crashing. Every time I try and start it up from the DM7020 web server.

Cheers,

Stvy

Hi,

Ok I updated vlc to the latest version. It works but I loose a lot of frames. This BBC HD site is maxing out the CPU. Core 2 duo 1.8GHz. Hmmm.

Are you using coreAVC codec? I think there's big post somewhere by someone who uses a PC to watch HD.

Managed to get Astra Promo streaming from Dreambox to PC, couple of break ups but nothing as bad as BBC HD.

I'll have a look into it more tomorrow.

Didn't even know the dreambox could do this, i'm truely amazed.

Rgds

Hi,

The dreambox will receive the signal of any DVB-S transmission. BBC HD is in DVB-S and not DVB-S2 like the other $ky channels. Canal + film HD on thor was like that too but it stopped transmitting.

The problem is the dreambox cant decode the BBC HD (and my tv cant display it) so I stream it via vlc onto the pc.

Worked fine on canal + hd but the BBC HD has a very high bit rate.

I am not using CORE AVC or anything like that purely the CPU with VLC.

Cheers

Steve

vlc will be using a codec to decode the mpeg4 stream, such as H.264 codec. coreAVC was the best codec last time I looked.

CoreAVC can't be configured with VLC i believe.

VLC uses the x264 codec which is alittle slow.

mplayer can be configured i believe but how i don't know.

Still playing with it when i get chance.

To add coreAVC to mplayer go to:

view > options > overrides > add filter

and select coreAVC Video Decoder

VLC uses ffmpeg codec and as you said, coreAVC can't be added to vlc.

If you google "download coreAVC 1.3", the 4th link may be useful.

And these steps will help you determine if your PC can handle hi-def playback:
