Best DVD Writer to buy?

Ok, my DM8000 arrived this morning, I want to order a DVD for it.

I presume any standard SATA type drive will do?

I prefer the slot drives to the tray drives, would something like Ebay item 390050915389 be suitable?

I had to just put the item number in because this forum seems to try and automatically do something with e*bay links that breaks any links you try and enter !?!??!

Thats a Blu-Ray player. I doubt if the DM8000 will support that. Sorry I cant suggest any drives as I don't own a DM8000.

Well I'm thinking if it does DVD stuff as well, the Blue Ray might come along later, not that it bothers me much, I gave up buying media many years ago when I realised it was a mugs game, having to keep changing your library every so many years when the media changes :-)

What about dual layer DVD drives?

I would think so, as when I've attempted to burn a movie over ~4GB I get a message along the lines of 'Dual Layer DVD Required'.

should I cancel the order I placed last night for the Sony AD7670S? Slot in type dvd drive.

If dual layer works, then definately makes more sense to get that! Is there a slot type dvd drive for that?

A DL support is nice to have, but unfortunately the media is still far too expensive compared to 2x DVD-R or 2x DVD+R discs.
I bought a pack of 10 last year and it still sitting on the shelf waiting for a really good reason to use it.
The DVD-R media with 4.7 GB capacity, can be formatted to burn anything up to 8 hours, with loss of quality. I use 3:00 hours formatting to fit 2 films of 90 minutes.

I think its time for me to dip in and get meself a dvd writer to save some of my recorded stuff that I've recorded onto the 1TB harddrive I installed when I got me 8000 a few months back, I worry that something will happen that will result in me losing me recorded stuff so I'd better get a writer just in case that day comes, lol

If you haven't got a DVD writer till now, then it would be a good idea to have one.
But I think that it would be a lot cheaper and less time consuming to just back up your HDD content with another 1TB HDD.
To make DVD's out of the *.ts files recorded on the 8000 will be a tedious and time consuming task.
Let us say you have a full 1TB content and with an average usage of 4 GB for a standard DVD-R (4.7GB), you will need to make 250 DVD.
Each compilation can take about 2 hours, making it a 500 hours project. !!!
This is one hell of a job to do.
Assuming you want only 10% of the content to back up to DVD, then this means 25 DVD, which is not so bad.
