Amos 5i will go into service at 17E in early 2010 and is due to be replaced by Amos 5 in mid 2011

Heres a piece of history....! Not only are both TV Sat birds long gone, but the country that operated them no longer exists! :D

TV Sat 1 & 2 were high power DBS birds from the dawn of the Direct To Home satellite age. They were operated by West Germany.

TV Sat 1 was launched in November 1987, but was put out of service early in February 1988, as one of the solar sails didnt unfurl. Rumour says that two securing bolts that held the sail in place during transport were forgotten and left in place!

TV Sat 2 was much more successful and was launched in August 1989. She operated at 19.2W until early 1995 before being sent to 0.6W until late 1998. Eutelsat then leased the ageing craft and moved her to 12.5W until she was put out of service in September 1999

The picture isnt very good quality, but you can clearly see that the boundaries of the Soviet Bloc countries were very different in those days - this was long before the fall of communism! The map shows operations from the 19.2W days.

These maps are from her time at 28.5E.

The third map is from a second source and shows just how poor the satellite coverage maps could be 10 years ago! The colour maps might look the same but they are subtely different - one is for 11GHz, the other for 12GHz :D

Galaxy 11 is an old American satellite which originally operated at 99W & 91W She was relocated to Europe in 2008 to provide backup to Intelsat 802

Theoretically she carries 2 Ku band payloads, covering north and south Africa. The northern Africa beam should just about be received in the far south of Europe (if its ever activated)

There is also a northern Africa C-band payload. Thiswill be very very low power into Europe - the map suggests just 31dBW which would need a very big dish indeed. Its included more for the sake of completeness.

Apologies for the poor quality of the two north Africa pictures - they were rather small so I has to enhance them a little.....
