Is my local in trouble?

I think I already know the answer to this but my local is tomorrow having a foriegn sat system installed. They responded to a flyer offering them ALL football (inc 3pm games), rugby, etc, everything except cricket the sales rep said whilst signing them up.

They will be receiving a 50" TV, no payment upfront, £42p/week subs for first year. £800 next year for a new card?

Is there anyway this could be legal? I'm sceptical.

Any response appreciated

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 6 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/10E/13E/16E/ 19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

The legalities are open to question at the moment - there are a couple of test cases working their way through the courts.

A lot of it will depend on which service is installed.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Sounds too cheap for legit subs (as it includes all equipment), but even if it is, there are still potential problems with the law. At the end of the day it is down to them whether they want to take the risk.

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

A risky proposition - but one on which I think we'd appreciate your continued updates

What is the pub like anyway, TV aside ?

Good beer/food, decent atmosphere, crowded or with vacant seating ?

OK system is sussed out:

80cm dish, Sky Italia running through an Italian standrd Sky receiver.

Installer said that only the UK differentiaites between commercial and domestic, also that SKY had give up on the Murphy case due to EU and free trade laws.

All comments welcome.

What does £42p mean

£42.00
or 42 pence? if this then it should read £0.42p

I assumed p/week stood for per week, so £42 per week is very expensive, hopefully Topper got the price right !!!

£42.00 seems to be in the range of the sort of rip off price for the full Italian TV in the UK

He's talking absolute rubbish from start to finish, if the Premiership had given up on the Murphy case, it would be all over the web like a rash, also, I'm pretty sure that pretty much all major european broadcasters insist on commercial rates for bars and clubs, can you really see a Sky company doing anything other than that? I know for a fact that the Greek company Nova do, as it is on their website, so that alone knocks his statement out of the water.

Oh and look what I've found: _http://www.sky.it/corporate/pagine/sky_business/sky_bar.shtml Don't differentiate?

It's pretty much a I thought then. Illegal and one big con....

The installer I suppose is only repeating what his company are telling him. Or more than likely ignorance is bliss.

My main concern though is the FIVE, yes FIVE year contract that has been signed. I dont suppose its worth the paper its written on with regards to misselling etc. £42.00p/week for 5 years almost 11k in total is still a hell of a lot cheaper than what SKY would charge hence the attraction.

How can I tell if the card is a business or domestic (Pint glass apply in Italy?), even if it is business would I be correct in thinking that 3pm kick offs are a no go in the UK?

I'll be having a nose at the contract soon, I'm guessing it'll be quite vague regarding what the promised sport coverage will be.

Is SKY the ONLY legal way that Premiership football coverage can be viewed in a commercial premisis in the UK?

Installer said that he has been flat out installing these and similar systems up and down the country, at least another six clubs around the area have or are getting this soon.

My System: Octagon 318, 1.1m Triax, dish and Orbital Disecq Motor, plus all other stuff

Spain also has commercial rates.

I you think your committee wants to break the contract it is easy, as it is civil. How?

Ask to see the contract for the card, yes it will be in Italian, but do it now and show due diligence, you have a legal cool off period ( 14 days?).

If the card contract shows ( and it will) that this card is for use only in Italy you can return to supplier, no breach of contract and they will not take you to court, I know been there etc etc.

They have also breached contract by being unable to show ALL 3pm games as sold.

What was companies name? If it is legit I am sure the mods wont mind it being aired ( in some shape or form)

What model was the 50in out of interest? Are you in Kent or Essex?

Much as it grates to say it Sky are completely blameless for this particular situation.

The reason 3pms are blacked out in the UK is solely down to the FA / Premiere league - they refuse to let them be shown live to protect live attendances especially in the lower leagues..

Cheers for the replies.

Club is of the opinion that a fine would still be cheaper than SKYs charges.

Club is in the red and needs to cuts costs, excuses I know. I'll just let them get on with it.

The Installer said the company was called ‘Club Entertainment' based in Manchester. Used hire vans no livery. Save time googling there’s no info on them, very professional!

I think this is a case of ignorance is bliss.

Thanks for all the responses but my advice has fallen on deaf ears.
