My System: Communal Sky dish. Technomate TM-5200D USB
Unhappy No Signal - Help Needed Please

Hi all. I am very new to this, and have more than one problem. There is a comunal Sky dish to the flats where I live, so my freesat box is connected to the socket on my wall. I was told that I would have to get an engineer to connect it up, but after phoning one, He said just connect it and it will work. But he was wrong.
I have checked the connections to my Technomate TM 5200 USB Super box, and they are all correct. But when I switch the box on I get nothing. Then when I switch it off (with the TV on AV) I get the Technomate screen, then that goes off and says I have 'no or poor signal'. If I switch the box on again, I just get a blank screen.
I don't know what I have done wrong, but it has been annoying me for a few days now. After a while I get fed up and switch it all off, and get back to my computer, as I can make more sense of that.
Can anyone help me at all, any advice would be more than welcome.
Thanks, here's hoping.

Hi,

To check whether there is a signal you need to chose a valid satellite and transponder.

Press the Menu button, then go to Installation- Advance Search. Then make sure you have the Astra 2 28E satellite selected. Then pick a valid transponder eg 10.729,22.000,V and check the signal bars at the bottom.

The yellow bar (Level) should be reasonably high, so should the blue (quality) one. If the quality level is red, you don't have a signal.

Hi Lesleyanne, It's also worth checking the satellite cable isn't connected to the 'loop out' of the receiver and the F connectors are fitted correctly to the cable.

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

How many Flats are there? The reason I ask is that there are two fundamentally different infrastructures for communal systems: A Multi-output LNB fitted to the Dish can provide up to eight feeds, but for more feeds a bit of kit called a multi-switch is required and this will be hidden in the upper reaches of the building.

If the latter, I suppose it is also possible that your feed is either not connected to the communal system's multiswitch or that someone has half-inched it as a second feed for eg Sky+

If that is the case, then you'll need to go via the Management Company to sort it out - they'll probably have a tame Contractor who maintains the system.

Hi Robbo, thanks very much for your help. I hadn't a clue what I was doing, but followed your instructions. At the moment it is scanning ok. So I am much farther on than last night. Also thanks for the password tip. I needed it.
Thanks again.

Hi Satelliteman, thanks for that. I did check again, but all the cables seemed to be connected where they should be.
Thanks

Hi Tivu, thanks for your reply. I am in a block of 4 flats, but the dish is on the other block of 4. So I had been wondering if I needed connecting to the dish somehow.
After more struggling, (my brain felt addled after yesterday). I have eventually got it working. The thing I can't understand is that it will only work with the box switched off. As soon as I switch the box on, I lose everything. So I will just leave it switched off for now, until I can find a reason for it.
Thanks
Lesleyanne
