Missing Freesat Channels! Fortec Star System

Hi Chaps,

Firstly, I would like to say a big thankyou for creating such a comprehensive, interesting and helpful site. I have been browsing the forum for a few days now to help with the install of my first FREESAT kit.

Kit:
Fortec Star 65cm Dish
FS-4200 Reciever
FSKUVN LNB

Problem
Im sure im on the correct satellite, I get the following channels with no problems:
BBC1/2/3/4
ITV 1/2/3/4 +1
CH5
Zone reality/horror/romantica
True Movies
Movies 4 men 2 (not m4m1)
Others: news, kids, chat/dating.

However, the following channels are on the channel list but do not show up with any audio or sound:
Film4/ +1
Men & Motors
Movies4 men 1

And the below are nowhere to been seen:
Ch4 /+1
More 4/+1
E4 /+1

What Ive Tried
I have rescanned and auto scanned numerous times, I noticed that the following transponders(is that the correct terminology?) show as status FAILEd when scanning:
11739 27500
11876 27500
12148 27500
10964 22000
11388 27490
11585 27490
11565 27490
11758 27490
12560 27490
....to name a few.

Setup
Using a labgear sat finder I have tweaked the satellite to its best signal. Signal strength shows as a solid 90% on the reciever, However the signal quality struggles between 70-75%. I have read ROLWF's guide on skew and FS LNB's however adjusting the skew does nothing to the signal quality. Its only when I rotate the LNB 100 degrees that I notice the signal quality going down. So could my problems be a faulty LNB?

Other considerations
The dish mount is solid.
The cabling has been terminated properly at either end, and has been visually inspected for any damage.
There is no DECT phones or Wifi in the building.
I believe the satellite to have a clear line of sight.
I havent updated the Firmware on the reciever.

Any help will be gratefully recieved. I cant stress the importance of solving this problem as my girlfriend is threatening to leave me as she cant watch hollyoaks!

My System: Triax 1.1m and Orbital 80cm Motorised Dishes. Various fixed Dishes. Eclectic selection of Digital and Analogue Receivers. Complex switching and distribution that SWMBO cannot fathom. Nor me.

This is almost certainly not a faulty LNB but an incorrect LNB setting in the Receiver Menu: Do ensure it reads something like Universal, Universal 1, Universal 9750/10600 .........

Also, I note you've not quoted H or V for the TPs you mention: That must be correctly entered - which it will be if your list was arrived at as the result of an Auto/Blind Scan.

Edit: Just re-read your OP and you have indeed scanned.

Do check your LNB setting in the Rx ...................

Thanks for the reply.

I have checked the LNB setting in the reciever Menu and it is indeed set to universal.

I tried a re scan last night and on the scan menu it shows CH4 and More4 however they dont appear on the channel listings? I try to manually add the channels tonight, however that wont solve the problems with the channels with no picture or audio.

Is there anything else I can try? My girlfriend is seriously threatening to cut of my nadgers....

Hmm. Sorry about the nadgers ...............

Have you tried a Factory Reset?

It is possible the Box has corrupted Firmware or is actually faulty, I suppose.

Can't think of much else that you haven't actually tried.

That said, I'm bemused why altering LNB skew doesn't have much effect. I do suggest, however, that you leave it set roughly in the manner described in the various Threads about that peculiar LNB.

Take the receiver round to a friend that has a sky dish installed (and working).

Check you get all the channels on there.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

Good news stories are always welcome - well done

Do look carefully at your Receiver though: DV3 is actually DVB, which is an acronym for Digital Video Broadcasting.

DVB is the International Open Technical Standards set of protocols governing methods for implementing Digital TV Services.

The Logo appears on all suitably designed modern Box models.

As you can now see, the Logo is one of the most badly designed and misleading you will ever come across - It's to be hoped the Technical Protocols it indicates are better thought out!

It may help others as they try setting up a Sat dish.

Well done indeed, you are not far off the mark with your number of FTA channels, a lot are rubbish but some people are happy with that on their TV to keep them company

Hello Chaps,

Sorry for delay in response. It appears everything was working fine and setup and my problem was that the working channels were stored under the 'EUROBIRD' menu which I never thought to look through, rather then the astra menu.

I dont know why it did this, however Ive moved all the channels to my favourites custom list now.

many thanks for help,
mike

Ah.

The thing is, unless you happen to be using a whacking great big dish with narrow beamwidth (which you aren't!), Eurobird 1 and Astra 2 are co-located: so if you scan Eurobird 1 you'll get Eurobird 1 and Astra 2 and if you scan Astra 2 you'll get Astra 2 and Eurobird 1.

I don't know why box manufacturers pre-enter them as separate entities, but it does cause confusion for the unwary.

Anyway, the main thing is you've got what you need now

What I often suggest is deleting the "Satellite" Eurobird 1 and Editing the name of Astra 2 to "UK". That'll sort it!

My System: Fortec Star

I found when using the fortes star FS-4200, but both astra 28 and eurobird in the satellite list, then set to FTA and do a multi search, it will ick up around 900 channels, but it will give no picture on the likes of film4 cb ceebies etc, but if you go throught the 900 channell list you will find them near the 600 to 900 ranges, just add them into your favourites and the delete the the ones with no picture or audio, just takes a it of manually searching and you will find all the channels you want.Otherwise than this I find this a very good unit, I have been now told the fortec star Fs-4000v2 to be the upgrded version, but personally I don't ind this to be true and at this moment am sending back 3 of these units as the are crap.Hope this helps others, from head wreck

Not so - 22000, 27500 and 29500 are nominal (declared) SRs and the ones the gentleman reports are close enough and are probably what is returned after a Blind, Auto or Network Scan.

All my Receivers return figures which don't correspond exactly to the nominal.

It is, of course, perfectly possible that the tolerance on what is transmitted is such that a Blind/Auto/Network Scan reports the detected Transponders' SRs accurately ................
