My System: Ross 65cm dish and freesat receiver (used in the weekend pikey wagon)- pc is self built (and old) 2gb ram, 3 x 80gb hard drives, 2gb Intel processer, dvd and cd burners, sony 17" monitor.
Question Sky + Box for receiving FTA channels?

Newbie here so apologies if this has been covered before.

I've got my eye on a second hand Sky+ box and am wondering if it is possible to receive the Astra sat channels without a viewing card?

TIA, John

Yes - although remember you wont have access to the recording facility unless you get a fsfs card and pay atenner a month fee to sky.

If you want to record get a Freesat PVR.

Many thanks for the swift reply - glad I asked, it doesn't seem worth getting a plus box then if it only records with a card.

So a standard Sky box will receive all FTA channels?

Yes of course it will

Fiver / +1 Five USA & Sky 3 are not fta and require a fsfs card.

There are a number of differences between the channels on Freeview and the free channels on Freesat so dont expect Dave and half a dozen others.

Which channels are vitally important to you?

Ok it might not be mapped onto the epg without a card for some insane reason.....

Yes to rephrase that, fsfs card or above for Ch4+1 to be listed on sky EPG, other wise it's add channels function. Certainly an interesting one.
