9 pin S video cable??

Hi guys....My brother in law just moved house and is installing his TV in the same location that the previous owner had his sited, This poses a problem as his surround sound system is installed across the room where the wiring for same was already installed leaving no connection between TV and Video player,there is however a 9 pin female lead at the TV running inside the plasterboard up the wall and through the ceiling and down to where the surround sound is..problem is both the TV and DVD player have standard S video connections..is there any way to make use of this 9 pin cable, because as it stands his TV can't connect to the DVD otherwise..I have searched for a 9 pin to scart adapter but have had no luck, does this exist? any help as usual is much appreciated..

I haven't seen one of these round DIN connectors for over 20 years!

I think that you'll find that they are composite video rather than S-video so you would need an S-video to composite convertor first - not difficult and not expensive. S-video connectors are mini-DIN and have 4 connecting pins BTW.

I can only suggest that you see what cabling is there and which is shielded. You might then just have to go your own way with the wires nd make your own connectors.

Mmmmmm, possibly. Looking at some of their other products seems, to me, to imply that it's converting S-video to RGB, not composite. I would have expected an S-video to composite video convertor to have just a single phono.

Judging by the colours of the phono connectors (a bit risky I'll agree!) the yellow could be the composite connector and the red and white connectors could be for stereo audio. Do you know whether audio was sent through this connection originally?

Can you tell from the photo whether the 9 pins are in the same pattern as you need?

The company are obviously manufacturers or distributors as they want to sell a minimum of 2000 off so you your next problem is finding a retailer.

I hope that Llew sees this thread as he will probably have more experience and might be able to help.

Hi paul...the pin configuration looks the same, and your right it may be difficult finding a seller..I've googled it to death,it looks like he will have to get a video sender which should sort out the problem or would it? if he is using his surround sound system with a video sender will this work? remembering that the TV is not connected physically because of location of both...What I mean is will there be any lag or synching issues between both? any advice much appreciated..cheers

The quality, both from an audio and video perspective, will be poor with the old wiring. I'd suggest biting the bullet and replacing it with some "modern" cabling.

I have such a cable converter which came with my Hauppauge Nexus DVB-S card, only few years ago.
I think that it is not difficult to find. Look under video cards accessories.

DIN 9 Pin Converter and got this

But It is only for video, converts to composite, Commponent and S-Video, no audio RCA. So if you don't need the audio, this can work for him.
You will need a standard S-Video cable with a plug at both ends to connect between the female connectors at the DVD player and the converter.
I am sure you can find it also in the UK.

Cut off both ends of the lead in place, and cut a SCART lead in half as well. Then join the appropriate composite video, audio, and earth leads , the colour coding between the joins should be a doddle to get it right first time. Solder the connections to ensure good conductivity.
If it works, great, if not, all you have lost is a SCART lead.

The composite video signal almost certainly will suffer - the chrominance component will be very lossy over any distance (colour fringing).

Hi guys...thanks for all the replys..but would it be much simpler if I did as I suggested above..just get him to buy a video sender and discount the cable altogether???

The o/p did confirm it was 'just across a room', but I agree anything more than 5 metres may lead to some issues (though the SCART system leaves a lot to be desired anyway).
