New iPod nano - get it while it's hot!

Today Apple announced the new iPod nano 2GB (500 songs) or 4GB (1000 sings) same price as the discontinued iPod mini.

Black or White cool or what?

Friend just ordered a mini - arriving tomorrow - how's that for bad timing!

Given that iPods still have fairly poor battery life, I shall be waiting for Sony's rival Walkman: http://www.t3.co.uk/news/entertainme...ts_the_walkman

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

Looks good, but still think that the ipod looks better, perhaps it will look better in the flesh though.

Is the sony working with iTunes? That is the killer for me because I just can not be bothered to put anything in order.
How long is the sony really running on battery? My iPod goes easy the 3 hours I need it during 1 day and at home its in its dock charging, playing over the sound system. Are you really using a musicplayer 15hours or longer in one go,without ever having a plug or USB port around? After all, the thing is full again in a good hour.

Greetings
Chris

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

No, the Sony doesn't work with the Apple AAC format, Im afraid.

Apple AAC? Thats not what I meant, I use mp3 on my iPod. But iTunes is what I´m after. This software is the best thing I got since I have music and with over 20000 songs in over 2500 albums I need it.
Btw, AAC is not an Apple Format, but a normal compression standard, even so,I got all my music in mp3/192kb/s, iTunes can rip your cds in that format as well as in AAC,lossles or other formats.

Greetings
Chris

Hi Chris,

Well, Kelkoo are claiming up to 40 hours for both of the new Walkmans, which sounds a bit optimistic to me. But yes, I do often use my current player for more than three hours without recourse to plugs or USB and I have been permanently put off iPods by the recent BBC Watchdog item on battery problems.

Well,I do not know the BBC report, but I had 2 iPods till now. The first (gen2) lasted in my tests about 12h, so 3-4 days and that means to me,that in that time I got to sleep somehow and normally I can recharge the thing. The iPod I got now (4gen) lasts easy 1 week, but as I said, I'm really not out of the house AND listening to music for more then 8h at the time, I think eventually your ears would give up.

The battery "problem" everybody is so concerned about seems to be the high price Apple asks for a replacement. They charge I think 79Euros (about 50pounds). However, I changed the batterie on my first iPod for 39dollars! and got the 15h one,its not an Apple product,it lasts longer and costs half. I do not see this as a problem. I think that it would be much more difficould for me to put my music collection by hand on to a device and trying to organise it. For me the success of the iPod is not the design or the price (the nano now is I think the cheapest on the market) but the concept of the software working so well with the hardware, also I can boot my (or any other) computer from the iPod and so I have always my ENTIRE system anywhere with me and that is just cool.

Greetings
Chris

New Sony Walkman (at last!)

Seen one at last at the SonyCentre - the A1000 6GB model looks especially neat. Two months from announcement to launch must be some sort of record!

The assistant reckons they held back the launch to coincide with the 25 Years of the Walkman Exhibition and gave me a nice leaflet about it. Possibly of more interest, there's also a display of previously unseen photos of rock icons (their phrase) from the last 25 years called the Darker Side of Rock. Both started today at the Walkman Gallery, 10 Greenland St, Camden Town (until Dec 9th)
