Serie A match-fixing scandal - The Verdict

Punishments awarded to clubs:

Juventus - Relegated to Serie B & 30 point deduction for 2006/07 season & stripped of 2005 & 2006 league titles

AC Milan - 44 point deduction in 2005/06 total (so as to deny them European football in 2006/07) & 15 point deduction for 2006/07 season

Fiorentina - Relegated to Serie B & 12 point deduction for 2006/07 season

SS Lazio - Relegated to Serie B & 7 point deduction for 2006/07 season

Revised submitted Italian clubs for UEFA competitions:

UEFA Champions League, Group Stage - Internazionale Milano, AS Roma
UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round - Chievo Verona, US Cd Palermo
UEFA Cup - Livorno, Empoli, Parma/AC Milan(?)

If you look back at Serie B 2005\06, Juventus would have to play as good as the champions of Serie B just to survive relegation to C1!!!!!

Wow, some of the pundits on the radio were saying that they didn't expect anything to be retroactive, but it certainly is for Juventus and AC Milan.

too true Apparently Luca Toni is going to Inter, it seems they are more interested in instant glory than building a team (which I though would be what, understandable, Chievo would do).

What a mess. It's going to take at least four or five years for the status-quo to be re-established.

I actually think that this has changed the course of Italian football forever, not that I disagree with any of it.

I'm glad they won the WC, because I think the national game would have semi-collapsed if they hadn't, and that would have been a terrible loss.

The Italian fans can switch-off pretty quickly if they don't like what they see put in front of them on the pitch, but at least they have the WC to buoy national footballing pride.

I could see in 5 years or so Serie A being as good a league as La Liga now, such are the way things go around.

Who cares if Juventus NEVER make it back, if the clubs that replace them as title contenders are more exciting? I'd love it if Chievo Verona, known as the Flying Donkeys (=Flying Pigs in English), become an established team, although I can't imagine Hellas Verona fans being pleased!

Oh, I couldn't agree more. It's just one of those pivotal moments that will change probably hundreds of thousands of lives and which happens right out of the blue.

I think many fluid entities such as sporting leagues tend to have a natural level, and will revert back over a period of time, but I agree that it's a fantastic opportunity for those smaller teams (and the knock-on effect of all the points deductions for all the other teams) to make their mark.

Man, that sentence was way too long and rambling, but I'm too dog-tired to fix it.
