Results from Qualifying of French GP

Official Qualifying Result

Perhaps the biggest news was about the one driver who didn't set a time when it mattered - Fernando Alonso - whose car was causing problems throughout the sessions and have now cost him with a 10th place grid position.

By contrast, Lewis Hamilton continues his sterling season, heading the timing in the first two sessions. In the all-important Q3, however, the Brit could not take pole again, and has to settle for 2nd behind Felipe Massa.

The Brazillian, and Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen, look to be making a comeback from their North American slump, with Massa at the front of the grid.

It was a testiment to boy from Sao Paulo's persistance, as he fought with the final chicane throughout qualifying, locking tyres on several occasions, but produced the goods when it mattered. Kimi is 3rd, a creditable effort, but one nows gets the firm impression that Massa is driver 1 in the red arrows.

Kubica returned from his inforced rest in Indy to the second row of the grid, whilst fellow BMW pilot Nick Heidfeld is 7th. Renault pair Fisichella and Kovalainen are 5th and 6th respectively, Trulli in 8th, Rosberg in 9th.

Race Result from French GP

Official Race Result | Full Race Report

Ferrari hit back on Sunday in central France with a 1-2 finish.

Kimi Raikkonen took the victory at Magny-Cours in a less eventful race than of recent times, but the Finn was a deserved winner. 3rd on the grid, Kimi beat Lewis Hamilton to the first corner, and led after Massa’s second pit stop, after which he was able to built up a sufficient enough lead that when he pitted, he came out in front of the Brazilian.

The first lap saw not only Kimi’s excellent launch off the grid, but also a chain reaction of collisions which resulted in the retirement of Davidson, Liuzzi and Trulli.

Hamilton, after being demoted to 3rd at the start, could not make any headway – to some degree as a result of a 3-stop strategy. He remained in 3rd until the end.

Fernando Alonso, on the other hand, had a mightily eventful, and frustrating, afternoon behind the wheel. The early stages of his race were centred on getting past Nick Heidfeld – but the German would not budge, out-breaking the Spaniard on several occasions just as the champion attempted to overtake him.

They met again over 20 laps into the race, and Alonso finally got past him with an all-or-nothing move in super-tight turn 8. However, Fernando’s pit strategy failed him, and by lap 61 he was behind Heidfeld and Fisichella – both of whom he had already passed earlier. Alonso finished behind them in 7th, with Heidfeld and Fisi 5th and 6th respectively.

Superman Robert Kubica came in a very creditable 4th, whilst Jenson Button captured the final Championship point in 8th.

And finally, Christijan Albers had to retire when his lollipop man signalled him to go whilst still attached to the fuel rig! The Dutchman proceeded to take out half of his pit crew like a rack of skittles, bruises all-round!

Drivers’ Championship

Despite not winning this time (standards are dropping already ), Hamilton increased his lead over Alonso to 14pts.

Constructers’ Championship

McLaren take a cut in their margin over Ferrari, but it will take a few more great performances by the Scuderia to challenge them again.

SupaLiga 2007

UPDATED SHORT TABLE
(Full table available in attachment)

Shall we just give Norm the trophy now?

Now 3rd overall in Pure Fantasy F1, it is not inconceivable that we could have a world champion in our little league!

The fight below him, though, is being fought with vigour as the Creatures go to 2nd at the expense of now 3rd placed Stunts. The Tossers are also closing the gap, busting out the 2nd highest score of the weekend (106pts).

Speedy Devils continue their ascent up the standings, jumping 4 places to 10th, but with a 43pt deficit to make up with 9th placed HondaWilliams, further progress looks unlikely at least for next weekend.

Entering two races behind has not held back Oily either, with his team again climbing, now at 16th.

NEXT RACE > BRITISH GRAND PRIX @ SILVERSTONE > JULY 8

Copa SupaLiga Round 1 draw due shortly…

Well I have not commented before but for a newbie I have to say I am doing OK thanks to Lewis Hamilton. Although I did make a mistake with my selections of team manager otherwise I would have busted ass good and proper, never mind next week will be my downfall and everyone's chance to catch up, I never have been able to predict the result of the British GB correctly in the last 30 years and probably will not do any better this year

It seems if you're new, you're generally rather good. I think banking on Hamilton is the way to go, but isn't it sickening how he makes it looks so easy?! I'd love to see Alonso's and Button's faces if he won the Championship.

Apologies all round for this, I feel like the bully who has spoiled the game. Of course it's mostly all down to Lewis Hamilton who has had a podium finish in every race and who had a relatively low value (and indeed still does!) at the beginning. Having Lewis from the first race has been a huge advantage, no question.

And as for being 3rd overall at the moment - wow! And Hamilton does make it look so easy - let's hope (from a British perspective that is, not for more points for me) for another good showing at Silverstone although the Ferraris looked more the part in France.

Don't be daft Norm, you're doing us all proud! Seriously, it would be a credit to the whole league if you stayed in the top 10 overall until the end, and amazing if you won.

Hamilton is making a lot of people in this country, and further afield, happy and interested in F1 again. All hail King Lewis!!!

Can I just say though that if you don't win now, we are all allowed a good laugh

Results from Qualifying of British GP

Official Qualifying Result

F1's boy wonder, Lewis Hamilton, landed on home soil and continued his incredible debut season with a pole at Silverstone. He is the first Brit to head the grid at his home Grand Prix in 11 years.

At the closing stages of Q3 it looked unlikely that Hamilton would take top spot, having not set the fastest lap or even sector times in either of the two earlier sessions. And after Raikkonen beat Alonso's time (almost going off in the final corner such was his pace), it looked a slim hope.

But Hamilton, with his last flying lap, miraculously took pole in dramatic fashion by just a tenth of a second, to the jubilation of a largely British crowd.

This left Kimi in 2nd, Alonso ahead of Massa on row 2, whilst Kubica is 5th and a revitalised Ralf Schumacher 6th on the grid. The two Renault drivers, Kovalainen and Fisichella, were 7th and 8th respectively, dropping Nick Heidfeld to 9th.

Hamilton's ever growing success is in constrast to fellow Brit Jenson Button, who failed to escape from Q1, he starts 18th in Sunday's race. Coulthard's season is improving, starting 12th, sharing a grid row behind team mate Webber.

Race Result from British GP

Official Race Result | Full Report

The Iceman thawed on Sunday, as Kimi Raikkonen recorded a third victory of the season.

The Finn did it amongst the backdrop of overwhelming home support for Lewis Hamilton, but the Brit’s efforts faulted from the early stages of the race when his McLaren was clearly not as fast as the Ferrari of the chasing Raikkonen.

Hamilton, now under pressure, made what appears to be his first mistake in his short F1 career when, reacting with haste to his lollipop man in his first pit-stop, almost went off à la Sutil!

This afforded both Raikkonen and Alonso enough time to overtake Hamilton following the first round of pit stops. Hamilton ended in 3rd, never threatening and his car appearing to have problems throughout.

The fight moved to Alonso and Raikkonen, with the Spaniard in the lead, but again the McLaren was the lesser machine, and when Alonso went in to pit a second time and returned behind back-markers, the Finn was able to build a lead large enough that on his emergence from the pits, Alonso was still following behind.

So, Raikkonen wins and Alonso 2nd, the champion having not tasted victory since May in Monaco.

There was also drama elsewhere, with Felipe Massa stalling at the start, and as a result spending the day racing up the field, ending a respectable 5th behind Kubica, and in front of Heidfeld, who himself had seen off the challenge of passing the Renault pair of Kovalainen and Fisichella, who ended the afternoon in 7th and 8th.

Drivers’ Championship

Tomorrow morning’s coffee will taste sweeter for Hamilton when he remembers that he is still 12 pts ahead of Alonso with 70pts, for which he has Raikkonen to thank. The Finn is back to 3rd on 52pts.

Constructers’ Championship

Although Kimi won the race for the red arrows, they make no headway in the Championship, as McLaren scored equivalent points.

SupaLiga 2007

UPDATED SHORT TABLE
(Full table available in attachment)

Norm continues to the lead the league, and is now 2nd worldwide on Pure Fantasy F1. However, he was not the top scorer today. That accolade goes to Kreachers and his Creatures, who scored 119pts, 4 more than F1 Aberdeen.

The other headline story of the day was Super 25, my team, who have broken down the door of the top 6 for the first time since Bahrain. In doing so, rolfw’s Rubbers drop a place for the first time since Malaysia, and Linhas also drops 1 in the standings.

Performer of the race was Oily, who jumps 4 places up to 12th, scoring 102pts today. So close is the battle being fought in the mid-table that Patience moved up one 1 place despite only recording 66pts!

Copa SupaLiga 2007, Round 1, 1st Leg

Spanish Armada 53-66 Patience
Toppers Tossers 95-88 The Cunning Stunts

I should have been more specific. I meant after getting pole and having a good first third up until the pitstops when he dropped back after each one. I must have been over confident that he would win the race.
Of course , he's doing very well considering he's a rookie.

You never thought it would live up to the hype did you ? Silverstone, I hate to say, isn't the greatest track on the calender, I think maybe it's time they build a track somewhere new, in the Midlands would be most appropriate.

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

I watched the Toronto Champ Car race this evening on Eurosport 2. What a cracking race - plenty of passing, a dry-wet race caused havoc with strategy and there were incidents and accidents right up to the checker flag at the end.

Oh and a first lap accident removed nearly a third of the field

As my other half said "it was a good race - far better than the crap GP this afternoon"

If thats the sort of turgid rubbish Silverstone is going to serve up as "motor sport entertainment" the sooner they lose the British Grand Prix the better. Bring back Brands Hatch
