Lidl's "Lervia" Electric convection radiator...

I just thought I'd post about these things. I got one about a month before I moved house (so the reciept's long gone by now!!!) only to find at the weekend that it has literally blown up. The cabling somewhere inside the radiator is totally charred and black, and I found some chunks of black stuff and a screw on the floor underneath. Looking inside through the grille on the base, a connector block has melted and burned for no obvious reason. If you too own one, if I were you I'd either check it's innards or take it back to Lidl for safety reasons.

That's one Lidl bargain I'm not happy with, and now I'm sleeping on my sofa as my bedroom is freezing cold...

My System: Sky UK family pack. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (4.6E/5E/13E/16E/19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA (with dragon cam), Coship CDVB 2300A, Fortecstar Lifetime Ultra, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S, 2250kb

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

Might be worth giving the local trading standards a ring - if theres a problem with them they can get Lidl to put a recall on them.

Good idea, but personally I'm going to open mine up and see if it's repairable (and if it is I'll replace what's left of the chokky blocks with Ceramic chokky blocks for better safety), but I'll photo-document it all along the way....

Not being funny here mate, but if you have found something wrong with a potentialy dangerous item i would report it to trading standards..

Only a child could have one of these in his/her room and could set fire. You know the rest.

Not reporting it because you want to see what the innards looks like isnt very clever...

My System: Skymaster DCI9900 + PC/twinhan combination. 80cm dish. GBPVR with 2 DTTV cards +hauppauge Media MVP

If it's less than 2 years old I'd still take it back. I don't think Lidl would put unsafe kit on the market and would want to know of a problem

I opened it up last night and the connector block was in very, and I mean VERY bad shape, the Live and Neutral sides were damaged, the brass connector in one of them is missing (I found the screw on the floor) and the other side has the brass part protruding through the plastic (both sides had melted away).

I'm contacting BBC's Watchdog as they get more publicity than just sending a letter to TS, and if there are any other people with the same radiator with the same problem, then a lot of people will find out and get them returned to Lidl.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

Judging just on the photograph I would think that Trading Standards might be interested.

Lidl (and Aldi, Netto etc) all source these from the far east at the very cheapest price they can get. Sometimes, perhaps, a corner is cut too far?

I see nothing wrong with Lidl, there's some very nice food there which you can't get anywhere else...

But as for the chokky blocks, haven't a clue, if one was loose then one side would have fried and the other should have remained ok, but it hasn't, I personally think that they weren't rated for the job and overheated causing the damage as depicted in my photos...

I haven't gotten the radiator any new chokkies as I want the really big chunky ones, so no, it's not working again yet...

If you take them off your shower, how will you get hot water?

I think I spotted some in a box at home last night so I should have some, that's assuming there's nothing else wrong with the radiator...

As for the fizzy drinks, well, I stay away from that as it's loaded with food colourings (as you found out), and I have enough of that in my cupboard in my kitchen...

Tell my landlord that, it's him that needs to install a heating system...
