My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I presume you mean a modulator, but it will have an analogue output, not digital.

So modulators with digital outputs are a no no then ...... Bummer

Yes, it would have to be a little more complex than a standard modulator.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

Considering the computing power required to compress a digital signal so that 8 or more channels can fit into a single analogue channel, I'll bet that it'd be far from cheap!

On further musing...

I wonder what's involved in creating a single channel digital signal, such as sent up to satellites by mobile signal trucks?

The main component in the system would be called a modem - modulator/demodulator, but there are plenty of types out there with different functionality.
Complexity would also depend on if the service is already in digital format, (or taken from an analogue source and then converted), needs to be limited within a group of other channels (a multiplex), and if that service needs to be sent clear or encrypted (requiring a DVB encoder).

A lot of the work is done within the SNG van before uplinking, the satellite providers also carry out much of the channelling within the satellite itself via their own equipment (very little direct feed content gets sent directly to the consumer, the vast majority is on a 'double hop', first stop being the satellite providers ground station), to achieve a reliable set of transmissions - compressed/clean/clear within the downlink on the other side.

A lot of worthwhile equipment does find its way onto auction sites, but it's not cheap, and hardly worth bidding for unless you have a specific project, a buyer, and a VSAT licence.

I would think that the OP was interested in perhaps transmitting a CCTV picture around to his digital TVs.

In that case there are PC based encoder boards (HIKVision ?) that could then output the signal to the monitor input of a modern digital TV

It would be easier if the connection types were known...

At where I work, the cameras are all connected to a card in a computer via BNC connections, so if he were to use one of them, he'll have to get either phono to BNC adaptors, or (if there is such a thing) a Scart to BNC adaptor...

Yes, but you wouldn't be able to select it as a digital channel.

My System: Portland DP100 STB, Asus Tiger Hybrid + Kworld DBT100 + Skystar 2 HTPC

I don't see the point unless you wanted to multiplex together multiple streams. I'm sure such a device exists somewhere for a price. You can make one out of a PC, some people have apparently been able to get the signal to be generated by a RAMDAC on a graphics card, but the cheapest I can find an actual PCI multiplexer for DVB-T is about £1200!
