My System: WinXP/Firefox 85cm Transparent dish and 3 LNB's One diseqc to Sky Star 2, and one diseqc to TM1500 and looped to a very old Pace MSS100 analog box
The Future

I've just had personal contact with three local companies who advertise themselves as satellite installers.

The staff in the office and the guys in the vans appear to know nothing at all about the satellite game apart from skypay.

When I spoke to them about using my 28.2E LNB for HD on Freesat for
FREE they reacted as if I'd just invented sliced bread.
I explained I was going to dump my wife's Freeview box and get a Bush HD box or similar with 'on air' download like on Freeview.
For the cost of the cheap box she would be the first of her friends to get HD.
So I had to slowly explain to them that they would have to get proficient at installing dishes with an LNB on 28.2E but for Freesat.
Why didn't they know this?

That first company was recommended by a local TV shop. Whilst there I looked at new TV's and talked to a pushy salesman about HD.
He said he'd got HD running on his TV, it wasn't too good but it was early days yet. I asked him which HD receiver he was using and he said its Freeview, he's had it sometime but it still gives a good picture.
I don't think he believed me when I said his TV may be HD Ready but he needed a HD Receiver to view HD TV.
Why didn't he know that?

So what does the future contain for this business when you find the people responsible for selling and installing know less than me about their job.

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

I have a very low opinion about many of the sky installers.

A few years ago I installed sky digital here myself using an old 60 cm analogue dish with a new lnb on it. A few months later next door had sky installed.

My other half happened to be home that day and had an interesting conversation with the ladder monkey which went something like this

LM - want sky installed?
OH - got it thanks
lm - nah you cant have on that dish
oh - got it thanks
lm - not possible on that old dish love
oh - points through the window at the telly which had Planet Rock playing - whats that then? Scotch Mist?
lm - slinks away very quietly

You're right, some sky installers (I refuse to call them engineers!!!) have no idea about satellite TV, all they know is how to drill a few holes, line up a minidish, and b*gger off leaving you to clean up the mess...

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

They've been trained to the absolute minimum necessary to get the job done.

And trained is probably too strong a word...
