Why are people so aggressive when it comes to dishes?

Discuss your wife's objections to the fifth dish going up or your concern that there's far too little violence on the box these days. You can also introduce yourself here or just chat about anything. Remember, no keys or files allowed.

Why are people so aggressive when it comes to dishes?

I installed my 90cm dish on my balcony a few weeks back and there is only about 8 meter or 25 feet between the apartment buildings.

When the opposite neighbour came home from work and went out on her balcony to watering the flowers she saw my dish and freaked out.

She was hanging out and looked shocked, when i came out on the balcony i could see how she was staring like it was something out of Mars.

She told me she didn't want that ********** dish in front of her view, i told her to stick it as she could not do anything about it, then she went on about reporting me to the house owner, good luck i said as i know i am allowed in my country to have a dish on the balcony if it's on the floor on the inside.

Why are some people so aggressive towards dishes? it's not the first place or time i have encountered this.

Is it the same in the UK with some people?

Yes, it seems that way. I have moved my 1m 4 times now, as I got fed up with knocks at the door from some annoying neighbours. Now, it can only be seen by my wife, who has now given up moaning.

I too, don't understand people's phobia against dishes. I'd stick a 2.4m on the front of my house personally, and like the look of it.

You could always chuck a bin bag over it I suppose, problem solved.

Oh yes!

But of course they are the same people who have monstrous Conservatories, create plumes of foul smoke with their garden bonfires and their Barbecues and who generally think that anything they themselves do is perfectly ok.

We are actually allowed two Dishes on privately owned property (unless in a National Park, Conservation Area etc.) - one of up to 1m and another up to 60cm.

It isn't the same for tenanted property though as Landlords can impose their own "reasonable" conditions.

Absolutely.

Functional and also disguises any need for repointing!

I have a dirty great trampoline in my garden, over 8ft diameter, plus netting, making it about 10ft high. Does anyone complain, No!! (apart from me, cos it kills the grass).

But put a tiny 6ft dish up, and the curtains are twitching, LOL.

Yeah it's pretty strange how they react to dishes, must be something that annoys them more than anything else.

My neighbour put up a net aroud their whole balcony which looked terrible in my opinion, but if someone puts up a dish all hell breaks loose.

Hi!
i tell the people, that smiling and talking bad about my dishes, that every one,has his own hobby!
everyone collect something, like stamps, tins, cars, old timer ,or what ever, when a familly, has 5 cars in the garage ,then it is accepted,by the comunity!

maybe our hobby is to exotic for the mass public!

try ,to talk with your nabour!
try to weak up his intrests in tv programms!
usaly, the reason, why the dont accept,is that the know nothing about it!

i often recogneized, when i would talk, the same way back,in other thinks ,to this kind of people, the also dont accept my view of collectiong thinks of others!
everyone,has a diffrent esstimation!
thats the "problem"
the way of taking,is the best, usaly,it can happens, that strange nabours never talk, with each other because of a dish, this is a very sad problem of our comunity!
dish reglementations, like in some countrys, should be forbidden!

When i went to London this summer i saw alot of dishes on flats, many Triax TDA110 dishes, probably for Nilesat.

I have never seen so many dishes, almost everyone had either a Sky dish or a larger dish, i even saw one guy in London who lived in a house who had a 3.8m mesh dish and Gibertini 1.5m mounted on his garage.

In my country you rarely see dishes anymore which is sad.....

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

It is a strange thing. I have to say that I don't understand it at all. To me they are a thing of beauty.

When $ly went digital I put a (second) satellite dish for 28E for my English friends the other side of the village, here in France. The original pinting at 19E is on the roof, three storeys high so I wasn't keen to go up there. Anyway they still wanted analogue German channels so it wasn't a problem.

What was a problem was that he lady of the house doesn't like satellite dishes. She doesn't even like TV aerials! - in fact I removed the house aerial from a photograph before she was happy enough for it to be published.

But I digress. When the time came for the new dish for Astra 2 to be fitted, given htat I wasn't keen to go on the roof, she was even less keen to have the 80cm dish on the front of the house so I had to find somewhere at the back where the dish could just peek over.

Now, as far as our house down here is concerned I have two dishes on the front and at some time in the future I'll be planting a 1.8m dish in the garden. I'm sure she'll shudder whenever she sees it!

The problem (still) with dishes, even the small Astra 2 ones, is that some believe they generate radiation.

I have spent a good hour or two in the past confirming that a receive-only dish does only that.

Precision 1.8m. The company is no more though, I believe. It's a gorgeous dish though, perfectly formed and built like the proverbial brick outhouse.

Nah, I think red would have looked better:-

(my current setup, as of 1 week), it was green before but didn't blend in very well.

My System: Sky+ Pace v3, and before that analouge 80cm dish with Prima by Pace box pointed at 19.2e (not very imaginative then!)

I think you'll find that, rather than people having any feel concern over their aesthetic qualities, for the vast majority of people it comes down to the simple fact that you've got something they haven't, and they can't stand it! So long as the dish is in good knick (ie not rusting to death!) and the wiring is clipped to the wall properly or concealed, I can't see why anyone should have a problem, they are probably better looking than most people's gardens.

Tivu - Bloody bonfires!!! Seriously, they really should be banned, why does anyone need them when there are more than enough clean ways of disposing of waste.

Remember the old 'H' aerials for BBC reception? It wasn't uncommon to see 20 ft. guyed poles attached to chimney stacks of large Victorian houses (the ones with tall chimneys) in one area where I live, well into the early '60s.

The reason for such extremes was due to the massive interference from the local electricity generating station sited nearby, which only shut up shop in the mid sixties.

I thought they looked quite imposing. Don't know if structures such as those would come to the attention of the Council now.

Any old, corroded, collapsed system on a stack, (in particular the ubiquitous four bar FM plus bow tie 'moon landing era' TV aerial) is an eyesore. If it comes down it would kill you, but plenty are still hanging about in the suburbs, just patiently waiting their time.

Ive had two dishes up on the front of my house for three years one a 60 cm black mesh the other a minidish been waiting for a complaint but none so far.
Going to put a third one up soon and see if that gets noticed, might even replace the 60 with a 90cm on a motor.

A third would put you outside the current regulations hence could put you at risk of a visit from the council.
