What a great week of music for me

I know that soem these names will mean absolutely NOTHING to the youngsters here but I've enjoyed myself!

It started last Sunday night when I went to see the Classic Legends of Rock with Acoustic Strawbs, Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash and Focus.

The Acoustic Strawbs I just missed last May when I arrived a bit late for Rick Wakeman's Six Wives concert at Hampton Court Palace so I was glad to catch up with what I'd missed. I wasn't all that familair with their work but I have to say I was mightily impressed with the guitar playing of Dave Lambert. Dave Cousins tells a good story and Chas Cronk provided some really solid backing.

I didn't know anything about Wishbone Ash except the name. Probably like a lot of people I would imagine. ANyway they were a good competent Rock and Roll act although it was only their very last song that I might, just vaguely, have recognised.

Focus were a band that I've wanted to see for years and they didn't disappoint. Still led by Thijs van Leer on organ and flute I thoroughly enjoyed the set. He's not able to yodel to the top notes any more but this was filled in by guitar and the audience.

Wednesday I took my wife and her cousin see see Cliff Richard and The Shadows. My musical tastes have a bit since I was eight and Cliff was my number 1 (Adam Faith was my number 2 and Lonnie Donnegan was my number 3 in case you're interested) and I was really going to see the Shads.

I really enjoyed it all and fortunately Cliff didn't do any of his eighties or nineties stuff which, with the exception of Devil Woman and Wired for Sound, is very pass-byable. My personal highlight was the two mini-sets from the Shads and Wonderful Land brought a tear to my rheumy eye.

Which brings me to last night when I went to see Joe Brown. A very enjoyable evening with Joe providing amiable links between the songs. He's been in the business for nearly as long as Cliff Richard - over 50 years! Interestingly, he was one of Larry Parnes' singers and one of the few (only one?) to retain his own name as a performer. Not surprising when you realise that Parnes wanted to rename him Elmer Twitch!

Anyway sorry to bore you for so long - hell, who am I kidding. I've enjoyed reliving it all.

Nothing now for a couple of weeks and then it's time to see the Ukele Orchestra of Great Britain!

Mmm

Very nice too Paul, sounds like you have been living it up in preparation for slowing things down

I have been a Wishbone Ash fan since the mid 70's when a Swiss guy introduced me to their music, I have a few of their tracks.

I find it hard to believe Joe Brown is still going, but I suppose everyone needs their pensions topping up from time to time and if you still have it you may as well flaunt is as they say
