Technomate dead

I bought a Technomate 5400CI 14 months ago from SouthernSatellite. I have been absolutely delighted with its performance since it has worked flawlessly since the day I set it up. I was used it yesterday without any problems but when I tried to switch it on today it was dead: there was no sign of any power being received. Naturally, I checked the fuse in the plug and tested the power cord. Both are working and so it would seem that the problem is with the receiver. There is a sticker on the receiver warning about voiding the warranty but since it is two months out of warranty I am tempted to open it up and look inside. Does anyone out there know if there is a component or an internal fuse that might be the problem? I have not contacted SouthernSatellite yet since I can't find my receipt.

Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Thanks

If you have good hearing, cock an ear onto the lid of the box (in a quiet room) and then switch on.

Let us know what you hear, if anything.

Hi friend ..
Almost certainly the switch mode power supply ..
Sometimes they just go 'lazy' with a resistor going high value or an electrolytic capacitor drying up..
Indications of this are just a refusal to start after removal of the mains supply and then powering up again.
In this situation no fuse will have gone ..internally or externally.
The second and worse option is that the internal fuse has gone black ..
Indicating a severely damaged smpsu..
In either case ..this is not a job for anyone not familliar with this sort of repair ...particularly as it involves working on the 'live' (high voltage)side of the psu ..
Your first action should be to return it under guarantee ..as has already been suggested ..
Removal of any seal would void your warranty automatically..
If the first action isn't possible then seek a qualified repair technician ...rather than attempt such a repair yourself.
You could in theory make matters much worse...

Thanks all for the very prompt responses. It just shows how valuable this forum is.

Thanks Channel Hopper for the advice. I have tried listening for any sound coming from the box when I switch on the power. There is no hum or buzz or anything which, I suppose, would indicated that it is the PSU. Thanks also for the reference to the EU legislation. I wasn't aware that warranties in the EU must now be for two years. I will have another hunt for the receipt and then contact Southern Satellite. I still have the original email from PayPal with the transaction details. Perhaps that would do instead of a receipt.
