Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station Tour

.... just got back from my 2-week annual vacation in Cornwall, and just wanted to mention that I went on the above tour (£15 for family of four) and would like to recommend it to any interested forum members.

The actual amount of information about current operating parameters was, to be honest, rubbish, but you can look this up yourself if you're interested. The drive-by tour around the monster dishes (largest is 'Merlin' at around 32M dia if I remember correctly...) was very cool, and they have a great interactive area that kept me and my kids fully occupied for a couple of hours!

They also have free broadband internet access for the day, which I found very usefull for catching up with news and email while I was away...

.... and NO, I'm not on commission!

Check it out here :- http://wVVw.goonhilly.bt.com/

Hi BG,
Went to Cornwall a few weeks ago, I looked at the brochure for goonhilly,
maybe I'll give it a look next year.
How was the weather? as apart from driving rain, hailstones, and gale force winds,
we did at least have two nice sunny days.

LOL,

the first two days were sunny, so I went fishing.

Wife not impressed then, when the rest of the week was pants and the tent was nearly blown away!

Oh well, the kids can go to the beach next year....

Your a much braver man than I. LOL
Me and the kids managed to get some body-boarding in though.

I tried body-boarding, but the wife wouldn't lay still long enough...

LOL. Have you not tried the inflatable model?

p.s. Has any-one ever made an inflatable satellite dish?

Went there myself also...

My wife and I went down to Cornwall for a long weekend at the beginning of May. We went to Goonhilly as well and, as a self-confessed technology anorak, I enjoyed it very much.

We also visited the Eden project and, for a change of pace, the Lizard.

We ran out of time and so didn't get to Land's End, and I didn't discover how close we were to the site of Marconi's first radio transmission until we were back home.

Anyway, here are some piccies we took.

errrm, no pictures. I'll try uploading later

errrr.... pretty sure not...

Don't let me stop you patenting one though!

Sounds a bit like my mate. He bought a newspaper factory. It blew away in the night.

@PaulR - good to know I didn't dream it all... I do tend to have wet-dreams over large antenna... dishes, ham radio side-band directional beams, throbbing vertical full-wave tower mounted STOP STOP STOP!!!
