Anti-drink-driving policeman arrested for alleged drink-driving

A South African police officer who leads an anti-drink-driving unit has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Dolf Marais was stopped at one of his own roadblocks and arrested for allegedly being over the limit, reports The Independent.

The 37-year-old leads a so-called "breathalyser bus" in the Zululand town of Eshow. His team is said to be one of KwaZulu-Natal's toughest, no-nonsense units.

Marais is out on bail and at work pending a court appearance to face a charge of driving under the influence.

Police spokesperson Thabang Chiloane said: "Inspector Marais was not on duty when he was arrested. He is back at work and has not been suspended. He will appear in court, but he has not yet been found guilty of anything.

"I know it doesn't look good that one of our own has been arrested for drunken driving, but we must wait for the outcome of his case. It's not against the law to drink. But it is against the law to drink and drive. He was arrested while off duty. We have no jurisdiction over our people when they're not on duty."
