Letter from SKY?!

Got a letter today about my boxes not being connected to the phone line...Gave me the spiel about missing out on the interactive serives, yeah whatever who cares about those! Also, they mentioned at the end about how I had agreed to keep my boxes connected to the phone line. Will this cause me trouble, not having it connected anymore to the telephone line as I know use my dreamboxes for the sky viewing?

My System: 1200cc with 100,000,000,000 neurons and 100,000,000,000,000 connections

Do you have sky+, a mirror subscription, or just a normal single one?

I have a 2nd sub, if thats what you mean by mirror, i.e. I pay an extra 10per month to get a card which has all the channels as the first.

My System: DreamBox 7000s - Nokia Freeview - Several GameBoys - DS Lite - ZX81 - SNES - N64 - Sega Saturn Dreamcast - PlayStation - Gamecube - PSP - iPod - iPhone - XBox - PS3 - Wii - No Life!

I you received free kit from sky the contract runs for 12 months.

I think it's with a marketing company - they gather information from your receiver about viewing habits and use them for advertising purposes.

If you signed that contract then, to keep the free kit, the box has to be connected to your phone line for 12 months from signing.

After that they can only request that you keep it connected.

It is part of the contract with a second discounted subscription (Mirror Subscription), it is the only way that they can check whether the card is being used in the same house as the main subscription. If you fail to connect the boxes to the phone line, they will start charging the second subscription at the full rate.

Nope totally incorrect in this case. Mirror subs have to have BOTH digiboxes connected to the SAME landline for as long as the mirror sub is in force.

It to stop folks passing the box onto family member and both getting cut price subs..

If you dont reconnect both boxes and get them dialing home you get billed full price for both subscriptions, so its in your interest to get it sorted.

Might as well cancel the second sub then, not gonna pay fully price for both. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

Ahh - the second box.

Can the full, second, subscription be triggered when you have your telephone number is blocked using the caller display option where callers cannot see what number you are dialing from?

I imagine the sky box dials 141 before the freephone number, so temporarily undoing the hide caller ID setting.

HI Guys,

Slightly related: what happens when we all* go over to VOIP telephony and basically forget about that BT wall socket?

BT announced recently that they are going to overhaul their network so it becomes a super-IP based one (I don't claim to understand the ins-and-outs); albeit, I'm sure it will still terminate into one of those white square things in the living room.

So, what a suprise that the new HD STB from sky has an ethernet connection on the back. "Download PPV, et al" clearly that's a connection that extends outside the home.

I guess there won't be a workaround for a multiroom/second sub afterall. I'm sure those sky techies (sic) surreptitiously think of everything.

* all as defined by the DCMS formula for digital TV swith-over; which is loosely based on the 'sometime-someday-looseit-catchup' formula first deployed by the UK govt. between 1961 & 1975.

Have Fun,

I'm off for pint, sorry, 0.5Lt. Mark.
