Underpants let down would-be hold-up man

A would-be robber who held up a shop wearing underpants on his head as a mask fled empty handed after injuring his face.

The attempted robbery, at a Spar shop in south Wales, began badly when the blue and white briefs slipped over his eyes at a vital moment.

Matters took a turn for the worse when he yanked the cash till with such force it hit his head, knocking him to the floor and cutting his face.

Gwent Police detectives said today the man, aged in his late teens or early 20s, then ran out of the shop, in Blackwood, empty handed.

He then made a second unsuccessful attempt to rob a nearby shop before running off still hiding his face behind a pair of Y-fronts.

A police spokesman said: "He entered the shop wearing the pants on his head but they slipped down at a crucial moment.

"They apparently had two holes cut in them for him to see through. But this does not seem to have been the best prepared attempt."

He said the man left the shop with an injury above his left eye and eventually escaped empty handed.

He added that they were looking for a person with a skinny build, shaven fair hair who was wearing a cream coloured jumper.
