Removal of Double sided tape from Plaster Wall

This stuff is usually seen in auto shops and used for sticking number plates onto the car.

Im looking at an internal plaster wall where the last owner has stuck posters up using this stuff

How do I remove it as its not coming off in any great hurry with a putty trowel. Any more force and I will damage the gyprock surface.

Is there a solvent on the market that can shift it ?

HELP.....

A solvent of some kind usually works on that stuff (paint thinners etc.)

May leave a sticky residue, just reapply again. At least it worked on brickwork, although it left a slight stain. Don't know about more absorbent surfaces (plaster).

The type of thinners you need is not cellulose (car paint) thinners.

What you probably need is stuff that is normaly sold as degreasing fluid in te car refinish trade i.e. it doesn't react with the paint. I have used it to soften the adhesive when taking number plates and trimpanels off cars. It isn't very fast though, you have put it on , leave it a while and then ease the sticky pads off with a plastic blade.

Have fun...

Thanks

I was going to try a can of WD40 and leave for the weekend , but as you say , degreasing, I would probably be better off with spray on gunk or something.

Not sure how the plaster wall will like it ...

LOL, a hammer, chisel and some polyfilla would probably be quicker...

Fraid not. Someone has used a whole reel of the stuff to stick posters up.
I estimate 3 square metres is attached to the wall in horizontal strips with a gap between each of 2cms.

Its a real mess , and this stuff just ignores the scraper tools.

Have you tried white spirit after warming it with a hair dryer? If you use WD40 you won't be able to paint the wall again as it's oil!

I'd be inclined to try lighter fluid - it dissolves most 'sticky label' type glue. It might require a second application with a clean cloth afterwards, its a good degreaser too.

Acetone will do it, though with that area quite a lot. If you wish to try first use some nail varnish removers (all chaps should have some in their drawer). If it works go to a local fibre glass businees, take an air tight glass bottle and sweet talk them into letting you have some, that's the cheapest way I know of obtaining it.

You can get scrapers which are just a plastic handle that holds a Stanley knife blade at a very shallow angle to the surface. They are often used for gettting paint off glass, but are v sharp and may help here

Acetone, or that citric solvent they use to remove coolant paste from CPU cores/heatsinks would be my first try. Pure medical alcohol is probably cheaper. And it tastes better.
