First man made device to break the sound barrier?

Anyone like to suggest the first man made device to break the speed of sound...........it's not what you might think!!!!!!!!!

I would have guessed the radiation (infrared) generated by the first human, or the first object created by man travelling its way round the orbit of the Sun (or the path round the galaxy).

Just to be pedantic.

My System: Pace 2200 Sky digibox with ftv card, Comag SL65 FTA sat receiver, 40cm Sky minidish, Setpal terrestrial receiver (for free uk tv only!).

I'd suggest the telephone (think about it!).

And what about - much earlier - the heliograph?

(Not quite what was meant, I think, but these do qualify!).

Don't think that either of those came before the whip spiney
