Not really a very clear photograph, but looks more like a Greenfinch.

Unfortunately I haven't had any experience with hand rearing birds, but if it is taking solid food, then it is probably pretty close to being fledged and should be able to fly away soon. You can always cover the box with a wire basket or wire mesh and that should afford it some protection.

I was thinking of bringing it in when we go to bed and then putting it back out when we get up.

I just don't know.

Have brought it in for the night. Couldn't see it, so assume it has buried itself in the paper for the night. Put it in the spare room were it's nice an warm.

Will give an update tomorrow.

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 5 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/13E/16E/ 19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

The last noble sat warrior to fly the olden flag of Analogue

Dunno about the pic but heres true story from last weekend. The grass was finally dry enough to cut for the first time in ages. The grass was long overdue a cut, and I ran the mover up and down the garden, and right up against the daffodil clumps as is my usual way at this time of year. Then decided to strim between the daff clumps to get rid of the weeds. Got one hell of a shock when a female pheasant shot out from behind one of the daffodil clumps. She had sat there on a nest until I strimmed the end of her tail....

Even theough the pheasants are a bloody nuisance I backed off and peered into the nest to see half a dozen eggs... I went and had a cup of tea and by the time I went out again the bird was back on the nest.

No happy ending, as the nest had been raided by this morning and all the eggs had gone (probably by a grey squirrel that keeps coming into the garden and wrecking the bird feeders)

Moral - any bird stupid enough to sit there until its tail gets strimmed doesnt deserve to procreate.....

Woke up at 8. Took the box downstairs. I was a bit surprised when I didn't hear any chirping.
I thought I would see if it wanted anything to eat before I put it back out.
I carefully unwrapped the paper... nothing there. Gone!
Wasn't in the bedroom. Can hear the adults calling outside, but not sure if I can hear a response.
I was keeping a close eye on it yesterday. Checked every few minutes to see that things were ok. No sign of any cat and made sure the crows didn't get to close.
I don't know where it went. I didn't think that it would have been strong or old enough to get out of the box. ???
Will listen out later today just Incase I hear anything.

I failed.

sorry m8 (just read post)

to any one else, (i don't think its a good idea to take it in house over night)(or you should have left window open atleast) rolf's idea of wire protection was best, the little bugger would need constant attention/feeding and reasurance from its parents from daybreak to dawn.

you didn't fail, without your help it might not have survived the gutter experience in first place, as for disappearence was it def in box when u took it to bed?

Thanks. Will try a different way next time.

I just felt a bit deflated after it seemed that things were going well.

It can't have been in the box when I brought it in last night. I thought it had buried itself in the paper and was asleep, so I didn't want to disturb it.
Thought it was a bit strange when I couldn't hear anything in the morning.
I can hear the adults calling, so I guess it must have been taken by something. Strange though, because I kept an eye on it every few minutes and if it had been a crow then I thought I would have heard something.
Ah well. Better luck next time.
