Peter Hawkins, the original Daleks' voice ('exterminate!') has passed away. I remember him as 'Captain Pugwash' and (going back a bit here) the Flowerpot Men's strange 'flobalob' language. Many other characters too. Obit here - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...277196,00.html Llew

Diablo/Mrev Cams ![]() Fighting the evil 3 Dragons under the Don Quixote banner,Sir Llew persevered where others failed | Examine the subtext of these supposedly innocent childrens' series. Here we have Bill and Ben, colloquially known as 'confirmed batchelors' living together and speaking in a strange language known only to themselves and others of their disposition. Their friend Little Weed in her flowerpot is perhaps not as innocent as she appears, maybe a temptress in the form of, erm, another kind of pot? As for the Head Gardener appearing at the end of every episode, maybe a man of the law come to put a stop to their suspicious practices... Don't even ask about Captain Pugwash. Roger the cabin boy anyone? Llew

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100 | Roger the cabin boy and Seaman Stains Both urban myths I'm afraid. It would've been wonderfully subversive it had been true though.

My System: Pace 2200 Sky digibox with ftv card, Comag SL65 FTA sat receiver, 40cm Sky minidish, Setpal terrestrial receiver (for free uk tv only!). | Yet another one bites the dust, very sadly ...... Oh yes oh yes, exterminate, exterminate, and I think the little house knew something as well, don't you? (cue spotty dog), ahead mi' hearties .... Around 1990, I think, there was a large format book called Childrens' TV, with 3 or 4 pages on all (British) programmes made up to that time. The section on Captain Pugwash had a curious "pasted in" bit. If you carfully peeled that off, underneath it there was an apology, saying ".... we accept that the characters "Master bates, Seamen staines ..... never existed .... and apologise ..... ", etc! The rise of this Urban Myth is referenced in the Capt Pugwash Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Pugwash#Urban_myth . The recent remakes of Bill and Ben and Capt Pugwash just aren't the same, entirely lacking the originals' charm.

Pugwash wallpaper in my bedroom (only one wall mind ). I can't remember whether I asked for it or whether my mum got a couple of discounted rolls? But it looked cool nevertheless That was way back in 1976? .

Pugwash. The original tv series was all drawn cartoon sketches. see: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/chi...sh/pugwash.htm a Pugwash story at: http://www.outpost221.com/pugwash/pugwash.htm . (you can see where some of those "funny names" might have come from!). Last edited by spiney; 26-07-2006 at 01:20 PM

As a reader of the Eagle from almost the first edition, his 'Harris Tweed' strip tickled my boyhood fancy (there was a town in one episode called Snottingham - quite daring for an early '50's comic!) Had a look at your links and decided on this one. Albeit, the one of nasty Jake (from the story link) was tempting, LOL. .

PC49 was very popular in the '40s and '50s. A long-running BBC radio series, and a couple of films were made, as well as the Eagle strips. http://www.geocities.com/gregorym101/pc49.html Llew

Save for a BBC actor coming across all 'Dick Van Dyke', the BBC have continued to employ such talent - till, well, as recently as May 2006 (the last time I saw the BBC). Example: Lottery programme for poor miserbales who think they are going to win. Programme: Millionare Manor. Host: Mark Durden-Smith (not a showbiz double barrel - a real one!) (and he comes complete with plumby gob). .

My System: Pace 2200 Sky digibox with ftv card, Comag SL65 FTA sat receiver, 40cm Sky minidish, Setpal terrestrial receiver (for free uk tv only!). | I had a teacher who looked a bit like The Mekon! Regarding silly names being deliberate, I dunno. If you want to, you can also search for hidden homoerotic meanings in Biggles and Billy Bunter. Easy enough to do. Where you'd expect to find such stuff would be in Baden Powells' Scouting for Boys (stop that giggling, right now!), but in fact this is mainly a fascist work (and fascists hate latent homosexuality!). There's stranger stuff in his next book Rovering to Success, but the entire aim is to create extremely fit young men that can form an army, for whatever imperialistic enterprise comes next ..... So, in my option these names (Titty, Roger the Cabin Boy, etc) are innocent, if a bit clumsy! Is this homoerotic? http://pinetreeweb.com/bp-sfb6.htm . (added) complete downloadable texts of many old scouting books at: www.thedump.scoutscan.com/nonfict.html. As it says: different times, different attitudes (which, I think, supports this thesis, ie the names were innocent!). Last edited by spiney; 27-07-2006 at 04:24 PM

http://www.dandare.org.uk/MekonPoster.htm . You never saw the Mekon walking, or even standing, he was always on that little hover-saucer thing. The ideal way to travel ! (to me, The Mekon looks very much like the original - unacknowledged - inspiration for Davros). Last edited by spiney; 27-07-2006 at 04:16 PM

Probably, we all WISH the myth had been true; the idea of some tv programme maker make "pulling a fast one", and managing to include some very rude stuff unnoticed. Alas, highly unlikely ....... A similar myth seems to surround "Round The Horne", that BBC bosses were completely unaware of the hidden innuendo, again completely untrue.
