How many people here give blood?

Not proud to say this, but up until last year, I had never bothered, never really crossed my mind, even though I had a fairly major operation when I was a late teenager which required blood.

Recently they moved the local session to a hall across the road from me and so for the first time in my life I had no excuse and have returned now a couple of times, the next one being next week.

Now the reason I thought about posting this is that they are desperate for donors from all groups at the moment, particularly the ones which are down to three days stock, also from the rarer groups, like AB Rhesus Negative, from which I believe they make plasma and is only present in 1% of the population.

Current Stock levels

So don't be like I was, if you are fit and healthy, give it a thought, it doesn't hurt and you could be saving a life.

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos I'm a lazy git. Porty dish face blew off the mount, not too pleased...

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

I really don't like needles so I kind of shudder at the thought of one being stuck in my arm for 10 minutes or so, if I didn't mind needles I would have donated by now...

The missis and i tried a few years back but it took so long in the queue we gave up as we had to pick the kids up from the child minders.
My missis has that 'special' blood type that anyone can use, can't remember the name of it.
Maybe one day we'll get round to it

At: 2cv, They can now use anaesthetics to put the needle in if you request them, you need not feel a thing.

At: Oily, that is Type "O" and you can book an appointment time, they have become very user friendly.

It's not the feeling the needle that's the truble, it's the fact that it's going inside me into a vein, when I had to give blood for a blood test I hardly slept the night before cos I was panicking about it, that's how much I don't like needles, especially the big ones for blood....

Thinking about that day now is making me shudder again.....

No worries, if you cut a limb off just before you go, they could always catch the fluid as you step inside the community hall.

I give the stuff, and have more than one identity card for the different counties round here.
As for the perks, no biscuits given in Cornwall, and very iffy tea in Hampshire.
A+ by the way if there are vampires about with a bit of taste.

I have always wanted to get rata*sed beforehand just to give a bit more entertainment for the recipient, but I have been advised not to, just incase it tips them over the edge.

My System: Dreambox 7000, Skystar2

My huge admiration and respect for anyone who gives blood.

They don't want the crap that's pumped round my body for one reason or another, which is a shame, as I'm quite impressed with it.

In this don't-give-a-toss world there are still plenty of good people out there.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

I'm O negative - the true universal donor!

I gave once some 32 years ago but since then I'e become extremely squeemish about needles.

I won't even have anaesthetic when I go to the dentists preferring to "think" myself away from the chair. Not had a tooth out in the last 30 odd years but I've had two root canals and a cap without a jab.

I had a blood sample taken a couple of years ago and just about managed to drive home before collapsing in to bed for the rest of the day. Wife said I was white as a sheet.

So, sorry but no can do.

Sorry to be morbid, but my father died because of a transfusion of infected blood in the '50's (he had lost a lot of blood due to a ruptured ulcer). A post mortem found that the sample bottle had had its seal broken sometime during storage. Verdict - accidental death, my mother couldn't sue the hospital.

Nevertheless I know the service saves a lot of lives, and the conditions are much safer from donor to recipient now, but i suppose I just have a hang-up about donating myself. All respect to those that do though.

Still, not worried about the odd jab at the dentist
