Weird Summer garden

Its a strange summer.

We have in the area round here fig trees growing fruit for the first time ever, vines that have never produced more than a bunch or two by september, just about to provide enough for a few bottles of plonk.

And this has just arrived in the garden

WTF is it growing into ? I hazard a guess on some type of swallowtail because of its size (just under 2 " long), but someone with experience of grubs and bugs should have a better idea

Apologies for picture sharpness.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

I don't believe it - a web site to identify caterpillars.

What's next - a web site to identifrty road kill?
