MTV Awards broadcasting standard

This years MTV awards were live but felt as if they were recorded. This pictures did not feel live. What was it broadcast as. NTSC PAL. I hope you understand what I am asking. I am 100% sure the output was relayed in a different video format. This formal was total shite and should not be done again. Looking forward to your answers.
