Question Test Your Anti Virus Software

Use this very simple test to check if your anti virus software lives up to it's promise. This is a harmless virus, if you can even call it that, all it does is display "EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!"

You need to copy this line and paste it into a notepad file (Right click on your desktop, New > Text document)

X5O!P%*AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Then save it, and close. Did your anti virus detect anything ?

If not auto detected, then do a manual scan. Kindly post your findings and what AV you used http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/w/thumbs.gif

Mmm

Nothing with Norton Internet Security either but I have to confess that this Eicar test file is from at least 7 years ago and I thought it had been superceded now

Same AVG as me Rolf .. Have you tried right clicking the file, and then click "Scan for viruses" ?

* Topper .. yes it has been around for a while, but still of interest for anyone not familiar with. It's always an interesting thread topic too, specially if peeps post their findings

Open Notepad then select File > Save As > then save the file as eicar.com.

Have fun with the zip file _http://webhelp.xenweb.net/EICAR.zip.exe

Download it to your Desktop, looks scary but completely harmless and easily deleted.

AVG picked it up on download, strangely enough Bullguard didn't detect it, not even when asked to scan the file. Interesting little routine when you click on it though.

PS. Not for the faint hearted.

Good exercise for anyone who has never had a virus attack. Lets them know what to expect

Also shows how we are never 100% safe. How two or more identical AVs on different computers can detect or not detect. I sent this to my webmail address and it was immediately quaranteened http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/w/thumbs.gif and not Gmail !!!

eTrust should have detected it immediately omkar. Might I suggest you contact them and ask why it didn't. My guess is that the programme has simply ignored it, which some AVs do. No problem there

I got Kaspersky 6, it did not even let me download the file! Great program, I like it much better than Norton.

I have had two bad experiences with Kapersky and wouldn't touch it again, gave it two chances, but the second time it completely knackered my network settings and had to purge the registry of all of its files.

I use the new pay version of AVG with built in firewall and like it, works well and it is straightforward to setup.

I was a Bullguard fan, but periodically they update it and you'll find that you cannot receive or send Email, or cannot access the internet, so will drop it when my licence expires on my second and third PCs. It also didn't detect/ignored the exe file above.

I must be getting old, I cant even remember the reason for removing Avast from the PC, it may have been something to do with older Windows operating software, but I did like it.

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

Tried this with NAV2005, didn't seem too bothered about it for some reason (nothing automatic, and a manual scan came back negative), but a joke program like that exe I have keeps getting quarantined without my permission, but it just shows it's working, sort of...
