My System: Sky HD, TM6800HD, Manhattan Plaza ST550 and TM1500 CI+. 1.0m dish and 36v motor, Panasonic DVD HDD recorder and Panasonic video/DVD recorder. Sony G800 HD TV stand/surround system + Sony KDL40W2000. Infinity USB, Elvis, CAS1, CAS2.

Not a bad spec that's true but cheaper than some because there's no digital tuner I suppose.

But a DTT freview receiver would only cost £22 from a supermarket, But the main point of one of these is HD i tested it this afternoon and it is as good as my £1300 sony 32 inch lcd which i brought about 2 months ago

Given that the switchover to digital tv is set to take place between 2008 and 2012 I think manufacturers should be obliged to build in the digital tuners. We are talking a board here and why should the public have to have a 2-box solution when purchasing equipment now when the changeovers dates are known.

Nothing against the TV you mentioned, I'm sure it's great but these manufacturers are getting away with with shifting their analogue TVs.

Certainly the cheapest I have seen.

Without it having a built in digital tuneryou would have to wait until they make HD Freeview boxes to experience the channels on terrestrial, so you would have to match it with one of the HD satellite receivers out there.

Anyone have an idea of when HD DVD player/recorders are going to be available ?

So it comes with a wall mount? And what are the response times like? I ask as if I'm an expert, but I'm not - just doing loads of research into buying one!

If your talking about useing a LCD or PLASMA for with embedded DTT tuner for terrestrial HD channels when they start it will not work any way as every HD ready LCD/PLASMA on the market today with a DTT tuner will only do SD they say HD ready as they have a HDMI port,

I have a 2 month old sony lcd in my living room with SD DTT tuner but when HD DTT comes along the tuner will not do HD DTT channels ,

You can buy HD-DVD player now i have one and it is great this is the one i have below
http://play.com/Electronics/Electron...r/Product.html

As for HD DTT receivers you can get them now humax make the HDCI-2000T some people in london where given them free from the BBC for BBC HD, ITV HD, C4 HD, CH5 HD, channels from crystal palace transmitter in london,

Sorry to hear you got it for the more expensive price. One way to look at it is that there's probably a few things you've happened to have bought after they came down in price and the two equal out over time. I'd be more than a little peeved to be honest!

Cheers for the info Rd100, we've reserved one in a local store (Basingstoke Centre to be precise - don't want to get your hopes up!)

It'd be nice if it was for me but I'm doing all this homework for my sis as she's the one in need of a flat TV (the house she's buying had one hung up - with all the wires in the wall, so she wants to do the same.)

She'd prefer a DVB-T built-in but I've explained to her that it's not worth paying a premium for. Incidently the same Argos TV - but with Freeview, is £120 more! For that she'd be better off with a twin tuner DVB-T PVR. And, as she needs broadband for work, and a landline and she likes her TV (albeit for free ATM) she may as well get an NTL or Sky bundle. At least that way she may have some chance of getting HD for the new TV in the next few years!

I was going to take the tv back and get my money back and rebuy it but no other argos stores within 100 miles of me have stock and the price goes back up on the 21st of november any way so i though not to worry

If you want a free HD PVR the NTL HD TV DRIVE PVR is out in most areas from the 12th december and is free to install just have to pay £10 fee for the receiver same as sky, It is the same as the telewest one here http://www.telewest.co.uk/html/tvdrive/when.html but ntl and telewest are the same company now and will be called virgin media from 14 feb 2007 any way, Also the Scientific Atlanta TVDRIVE pvr is much better qulity than the thomson sky hd receiver and it has three tuners aswell

I knew Telewest already had a HD PVR but I figured the existing NTL areas weren't gonna be ready for some time yet - so this is good news!

Cheers again for the info. I'll be seriously pursuading my sis to go for this option. I guess NTL's prices will be the same as (soon to be) ex-Telewest's?

Oh, and do you know if there's any DVD players that can play HD DiVx? Trying to Google for them is a nightmare as "HD" lists hundreds upon hundreds of HDD players and "HDTV" isn't exactly right either.

Cheers Rd100, seems like a nice player for the price. The only thing I'm not too sure about is whether it can play DiVx files that are originally HD resolution. There's plenty of torrent sites now that do the shows she loves in HD resolution - okay they aren't gonna be proper HDTV quality (being rips and only twice the size of the SDTV rips of the same shows) but they'd still look pretty sweet I'd imagine.

It looks to me that it just upscales/converts SD. The photo playback looks good though as it's true HD. A well taken picture would look amazing!

The only way you will get true HD on it is via a xbox 360 connected to a pc runing media center or pc direct to the screen of via a HD or blu ray player

HD-DVD PLAYER: http://play.com/Electronics/Electron...r/Product.html

HD MOVIES: http://www.play.com/DVD/HD%20DVD/NAV...egionHome.html

BLU RAY PLAYER: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...r/Product.html

BLU RAY MOVIES: http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/NAVS...egionHome.html

Also the philips i gave you a link to will only do SD ONLY,

Cheers for the pics and the links. I'm sure a real HD divx player is in the works somewhere. I don't think I'd be able to interest her in an Xbox 360! But that philips would be a good stop-gap if she wants the best possible SD DVD pictures.

She's got a Sony VAIO notepad (don't know the model number) but as it's so tiny and as it's probably 2-3 years old now, it probably hasn't got the power or the ports to do streaming. I'd have to find out if it can be hooked up to the TV (I know regular PCs can be) as that would be pretty sweet for browsing and YouTube!

Second thoughts, YouTube would look atrocious on a 32" HDTV!

Nightmare! Got the TV alright and the one on display looked good (it was switched off though!) - have to wait until tomorrow to check it out but...

My sister has gone and ordered NTL... but she agreed to the analogue service! That's gonna look great on this bleeding TV! (I'm in quick reply mode so can't choose a more appropriate smilie!)

I can't believe she didn't consult me first and I can't believe she agreed to pay what she is apparently gonna pay. Do they even provide broadband in analogue only areas? I didn't even know there were analogue only areas - I certainly wouldn't expect them in a city centre! (here's where the puzzled smilie would go!)

The whole reasoning was that it made sense to get phone/broadband/basic TV bundled and the NTL £30 for 3 was the best fit for her needs. If I've got it right she's going to be paying £35 for basic analogue cable and a phoneline (is she/are they insane!!!?!)

I'd have to get her to cancel it tomorrow and get Sky (I can't believe I'd ever say those words!)

Yes some NTL area's E.G a lot of parts of london sill use analouge UHF/VHF only as the networks is so bad it can not even handle SD digital and has no telephone or no broadband,

She could still cancel it as she has not had it installed yet if she wanted to,
