HDTV...Is it worth bothering??

I was just wondering if it is worth forking out the money for HDTV kit.
I only use FTA equipment as
1: I'm too tight fisted to donate to the Murdoch cash cow.
2: Cams, keys, patches, cards etc are beyond my simple brain.

Is there anything on the various sats for free that warrants the outlay of numerous pound notes or am I just as well sticking with what I've got.

IMHO
Don't spend a bean, if like me you do not have money to throw at this hobby then forget it, in any case as all the various parties involved cannot seem to decide on a standard why bother at all. Remember Betamax Vs VHS ?
For many people know that VHS did not enter the equation initially but they still won. I am going to wait a long long time before committing any money to this format.

That's what I thought.

Thanks Topper.
I had some doubts, but now I'm sure my pennies are better off staying in my wallet

You're right, I haven't got oodles of money to throw at this.
My whole kit consists of cheap Lidl sat equipment and even cheaper freebie analogue gear from a tv engineer friend. I have more than enough channels to play with (when there's something on worth watching) and the picture on our assorted tellies is quite alright for me.

I've seen the BBC HDTV playing on the tv's in our local Tesco's and to be honest, the picture doesn't seem all that different. Yes it's sharper, but not £500 sharper!!!!!

My System: Sky+, DB 7000s, Gemini 4.3 in flash, Var on USB stick. Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum.

I agree, making do with a secondhand Sony at the moment and if this one breaks, I will probably replace with a similar one. There isn't much to watch in HD at the moment anyway.

I think it might be better to wait until there is more HD content available.Unless you have an XBox what's the point. And prices are falling every year.

Making do too

Hi Rolf
Our tv's are the same.
Main one is a 4year old Bush £99 Tesco special, also a couple of cheap second hand portables.
The only extravagance is the 3 year old Samsung tft which we use when in the caravan. (bought to save space)
All of them have a great picture, although I do miss widescreen occasionally. As crt tellies are virtually being given away now, I might just spash out on a cheapo widescreen one and wait until the HD ones are more reasonably priced.
