RE: Is it possible to have Sky Digital in one Room and Dreambox 500S in another room?

This section is for discussion on domestic multi-receiver systems for distribution of both terrestrial and satellite signals. Multiswitch, diplexer, triplexer, earct bonding, smart Priority switch, signal splitter, SCART doubler, video sender, remote extender, etc.

My System: Currently have SKY Digital in the living room and was paying for multiroom which now has come to an end. I have the connection set up just need to see if i can connect a new box there
Question RE: Is it possible to have Sky Digital in one Room and Dreambox 500S in another room?

Hi everyone,

I have Sky Digital with the Sky Digital Receiver Box in the living room that I pay monthly for and Sky Multi Room connection in my bedroom which I stopped and am thinking of setting up a Dreambox 500S. I am slightly confused on whether or not I can use the same satellite for two different boxes and view different channels in two different rooms .

I wish to continue my Sky in the living room but for my bedroom i am thinking of buying the Dreambox 500S and subscribe to card sharing with my friend in Belgium, is this possible over one satellite?

Please help me with this

Thanks,
Kamz

Well

You would need another dish and lnb feed if the shared channels were on another satellite.

Yes, of course you can have a receiver in a diffent room, connected to a dish for the same satellite. Since you had Sky multiroom before, you just connect your new receiver to the cable that the Sky box was connected to.

Hi Robbo,

So provided I get the Dreambox 500S in my bedroom i can use the receiver and card share with my friend in Belgium? This wont cause any problems to my Sky connection in the living room will it? :S

From your response I can only assume you are wanting to share your sky card with him, whereas I was assuming you were wanting to share the channels he was willing to share with you which may not be on 28.2 East.

What you appear to be proposing will require a Dreambox in the living room as well if I am not mistaken, where the card is situated

Yes

You need an lnb pointing at the satellite he is receiving his channels from, whatever that is, all he will be giving you will be keys over the internet, you must receive the channels yourself first.

Your friend will also need a dreambox/linux based receiver that can CS and you will both need a permanent internet connection

Yes, as he will be getting his channels from Hotbird or another Astra most likely. You need to find out exactly which package he has, so you know which way to point the new dish.

Do you intend sharing your Sky UK card with your friend? If so this complicates things a little. The card will need to be inserted in the Dreambox, in which case your Sky Digibox will only be of any use as a Free to Air receiver.

If I were in this position, I'd do one of two things.
1: Buy two dreamboxes and ditch the Digibox. This would allow you to view all your Sky UK channels in both the living and bedroom as well as those that your friend shares with you.

2: Put the dreambox with the card inserted in the living room and use the Digibox as a FTA reciever in the bedroom.

PS: Sky UK have a card swap in progress at the minute, so if your intention is to use the Sky UK card in the dreambox, I would hold off on buying any equipment until its known for sure that you can use the new cards.

While there are still a few bugs, NewCS will read a 0963 caid (white) sky card.

I've booted up, I've patched in, I'm online, offline, downloaded and extremely cheesed off!

Yes, it will. But who knows what will happen when the switch over is complete. Also, I didn't think you could receive updates while using NewCS 1.66.

My System: Computer is xp on windows 7. satellite connection is tata sky

This thread is very informative as i was wondering on the same thing. As answered in the second post, getting a new dish is essential as each settop funciton with one dish only AFAIK.

I don't know about the updates, didn't have it in the reciever long enough as the missus can only just work the sky box

The way I understood it it won't make a differance after the switchover as the new cards are NDS3 and the old NDS2. There is every possibility that I have that wrong though
