Sun Direct TV to invest Rs 150 crore for expansion

As part of its strategy to achieve a pan-India presence, Direct-to-Home (DTH) service provider Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd plans to pump in about Rs. 150 crore for marketing this fiscal.

Sun Direct, which already enjoys subscriber base of 1.3 million, hopes to mark its presence across the country by the end of October this year.

Sun Direct expands DTH service to Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana

MUMBAI: After mopping up a million subscribers in the Southern market in a short span of 200 days, Sun Direct, the Sun TV Network's direct-to-home (DTH) service, is foraying into Northern India.

The Chennai-based service provider has rolled out in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat.

It is pumping Rs 1.5 billion for expanding its subscribers base to 3 million by the end of this year.

Sun Direct COO Tony D’Silva said, “We are all set for a pan- India launch of our services. We have created strong logistics, servicing and marketing teams across all regions to ensure that customers have the best of service and DVD quality entertainment at an affordable price.”

As an introductory offer, the company is offering a basic package of over 130-plus channels at a price of Rs 999 for a 10-month subscription. The offer also includes free dish and set top box with Rs 1000 towards installation charges.

The company targets a subscribers base of 1.4 million from these states. "We have achieved 1.4 million subscribers in the four southern states since we launched in December 2007 and we plan to achieve the same number of subscribers from this region," he said. Currently, the company is importing set top boxes from China and Taiwan.
Sun Direct is planning to launch its service in North East, Orissa, Maharashtra and West Bengal and subsequently in UP, MP and Bihar. Sun Direct is a 80:20 joint venture between the Maran family and the Malaysia-based Astro Group.
