Rooftop Photos of Dishes in Cairo

May-be there photos don't belong here so feel free to move them if you want to Rolf. They are some photos I took this morning from a friends apartment in the middle of Cairo, every inch of every roof top is a dish.

Oh...My...God....

Loving the pictures though, rather artistic! If you have high quality originals could I pretty please have them for my computers wallpaper?

Any ideas about where they are pointing? My guess (probably wrong) would be Arabsat 26e.. Or..then again, Nilesat @ 7w.

A dish can never be to small, depends on what you want to do with it. DXing or foreign TV watching. So if one has the space and doesn't hurt anyone in any way, why not install a 5m ? But i agree if you say that for the local programmes a smaller dish is more than sufficient.

If you get what you want, why not many small dishes ? What i wanted to say is just that one has not the right to tell another person get rid of your big dish because it ruins the surrounding view. If the place is not of his property or danger existant because of the wind or whatever, then i fully agree.
I would be happy to be able installing a dish at all since it is forbidden in this house and digging a hole for the cable seems to be a criminal act as well. Here where i am in the center of Stuttgart the local cable company has a monopoly and since 10 years nothing has changed into good. 34 programmes which carry nice programming from time to time but for this money (15€ per month roughly) it's not worth it and as foreign TV stations we have just CNN Int., BBC World, NBC Europe, TV5. That and no more. Terrestrial reception gives you a noisy picture of the 3 state channels. Middle age situation in some words.

You could try to set up a dish inside the house , it works even through glass but you got to have a south facing window with a clear line to the sat..

Yes i am aware of this method and thanks a lot for the reminder but the flat looks to the west, inside i have no space for any dish and a tree is blocking as well so no chance. Even outside on the balcony the maximum size of that i would say strong winds would not harm is 90cm (4th floor). Well and ending here i can say for sure that i would have free sight only from 7E-30W, maybe from 10E-58W. Why ? Well eastwards the wall of the house (11 stores) blocks and westwards some hills that are 100m higher. The best place here would be on the roof where the company that owned it some years before installed mobile phone antennas but even if you live 50 years here you are not allowed to get up there. This would be the ideal place for a nice 2axis C/KU 3m dish or even bigger. But this ain't possible, so the only solution is to move away, but we all know this is often even more difficult but the time will come sooner or later. I only hope that it won't last another 12 years. This is how long i am interested in satellite reception. This is a small part of my story. The rest could let you believe that some things aren't democratic here but since it is an old story and forgotten i will not wake up the sleeping dogs as we use to say here

Yes that's why i can stand it. There are thousands of people having such problems. The worst is that the politicians don't force cable TV providers to integrate the basic programming. One might say they are not state owned, of course today not, but not many years before they were. At least all the state channels for which everybody is paying must be available but they are definitively not. And the quality of the existant ones is not as it should be. Well money rules this world, if you are rich you can make use of your rights, if you aren't then better shut up. Anyway this is politics and i spent too much time in these things.

Let's return to the dish photos of Cairo

Perhaps some m8 from Cairo on this board could pay that guy a visit so he could tell us what he's doing. Guess we are all searching for new birds we do not know of yet or perhaps learn somthing new on James Bond activities :-)

Hello Robbiewright,

Nice pictures you have there! :-)
I would like to put those pics from Cairo and more if you have some into my international gallery here:
www.satlex.net/en/intl_gallery.html

You will appear on each picture like "Copyright by Robbiewright". Is this ok?
Do you have more? Please let me know! Thanks!
