My System: Fortec Star FS4400 | Got the FS4400 recently and am trying to use external HDD to record programmes using USB connector. Small 37GB drive works just fine, but when I put a 500GB drive onto the USB port I have problems. The drive is a Seagate 500GB but has auto power on/off inbuilt as energy saving feature. Problem is that HDD and FS4400 start 'hunting' and switching each other on and off. It is not possible (I believe) to turn this facility off on the Seagate. Suspect problem is a firmware issue in the FS but would appreciate hearing from anyone else who has experienced this and if they found a solution.

My System: Fortec Star 4400 / Windows XP | Somebody's mentioned this problem at the Digital Spy forums: _http://www.digitalspy.com/forums/showpost.php?p=27689095&postcount=6 Unfortunately, the site they've linked to in their post, is a dead link. _http://sataid.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=194 If you're a member there, maybe you could send the poster a Private Message - and then share the info here.

Hi Justin, Many thanks for your reply re the S4400 'hunting' problem with Seagate 500GB external usb HDD. I will try to get to the site you have recommended. So far I have tried a 500GB 'boxed' Seagate drive, a 500GB 'boxed' Maxtor drive and a separate 500GB Western Digital raw drive in a universal external usb 'box'. All show the same problem. I now don't know whether the problem is related to auto sleep modes, whether the FS4400 will not work with SATA drives or whether it is a drive size issue. I am just about to try it with a 160GB ATA/IDE drive in the external USB enclosure. Fortec Star Tech Support are very good at bouncing a reply back telling you are they 'looking into the problem' and asking for serial No's, software revisions etc but that then seems to be the extent of their support. Not good I'm afraid, Thanks again

My System: Fortec Star 4400 / Windows XP | Have you tried to reinstall the official firmware from the Fortec site? Can you still access all the menus on the box?

No the box just displays ASH. When I switch the box on it says ON then goes to ASH, nothing displayed on tv, no sound or menu.
