Thats incredibly annoying as it look as though i might have to use a USB/Serial adapter too. I had worried that it would not create the sufficient com port but as there was a derth of information on the subject i've taken the plunge and ordered one.

I'll let you know how i get on and if i find a way to do it.

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Which programmer have you ordered, apparently the Elvis USB works well in phoenix mode without a serial connection.

Did you mean me or the original poster? If its me, i haven't ordered a progger yet, just the USB serial adapter. Tho i've just tried to flash my Simba 201 using my dad's PC and the stuff i downloaded at la caf doesn't work - the zip files needed to be passed to the receiver are corrupt and won't let me access them. i can't find them anywhere else. Any clues? I see he's got a 2a edition, but there's no instructions for that and i don't wanna try and flash my recevier without being 100% sure whats going to happen.

Sorry if i've taken over this post - wasn't my intention!

That bit already works - its the actual patch that deosn't work, what the website calls the 'Patch Firm. Allcam for decoders Aston Simba'.

I can download it fine, its just that the three files are corrupt and i can't do anything with them. DO you have them?

Yes the file on Le Caf is corrupted as you say. I've zipped the original on my PC and you're welcome to use it. Not sure of the size limit we can upload, but here it is:-

cheers-found a few different versions so i'll just check. I'm getting to a certain point in the flashing process then it doesn't work. i'm supposed to get a grey menu (http://www.la-cafetera.com/manualrj45.htm and you'll see which one i mean) after the first few yellow lines. any clues? i know it was a long time ago!

Are all leds on in the receiver? If so it's ready for loading. Do you have a jumper between 6 &7 of the RJ45 on your interface? if so this must be in place before switching on receiver.

Now my version of jumpers are the little black things that sit on pins, is that what i'm looking for? If so, the RJ45 interface i bought has one but its on two pins outside of the rj45 interface on the card. No interference with the pins themselves.

my bad - looks like the jumper is in fact linked to 6 and 7 via the circuit board.

If you can bear with me, I'll set up my Simba and see how far I get... I'm sure I had this trouble when I first tried. Doing it again might reactivate my brain cells

Hold the beer - You haven't got it going yet -
Mine comes up immediately wih boot and flash ready.Your problem seems to be between PC and interface. The receiver will show 'boot ready' if you have the interface connected to the receiver regardless of whether you have communication between interface and PC.
Check your serial connection.

aha, that may well be where the problem is. i've had to use two serial cables connected 2gether because of male/female issues. is that likely to cause a problem?

also, where on the receiver should it say boot ready etc? i've got a simba 201 and there's no readout on the front panel.

Ah yes - I've got an Simba 1.5. I'll spare you the gory details exept to say that I killed the processor in the Simba 2 checking a fault, managed to aquire a cheap Simba 1 and stuck the front of the 2 on it, which has a display. You'll be just concerned with the LEDS.
The serial cable has to be straight through, not null,as you're working 'through' the interface, not terminated by it, as you would if you were connected directly to a receiver.
However many cables you use, straight through it is.

Not sure myself about that one. If that's what you have to use, you can give it a try.
