Question is it possible to put firmware with different Model ID?

Is it possible to put a firmware with different model id but with a same HW version on a receiver?

My HW version is 200 and my model id is a111. I want to put a new firm ware with HW=200 and and a different model id. Is it possible?

I have heard it is possible, I heard when HW versions are similar we can put new firmware with different model id on receiver by erasing flash memory.

Is it true?

Please Guide me.
