My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Well you can go the two way satellite route, or use a 3G modem card, but which ever way you do it, it is going to be relatively expensive. How much use is it going to get?

Hi,we tried a 3g Modem card before from vod**hone. and it wasnt very good, it didnt work in poor weather, and it didnt like the steal structure of the warehouse.Im thinking of going down the satellite to satellite route. It will be used 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. but only small amounts of data need to be transferred. (trying to set up an RDP connection to our main site)Kebabinho

There are some threads on Internet via satellite on this forum.
Do a search and you might find some suitable suggestions.
You can try europe on line from Germay, but with a one directional setup, you will need an ISP to send the commands.

Edit: Sorry, just reread your post and you can't have a telephone line so no ISP I guess.
Internet via mobile with a special antenna on top of building to overcome the steel attenuation?

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos there's no room for dishes here... :(

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

Hi, Looking about thare are a few options, but I have found "AVC" has a "backup" service which looks to be a PAYG service (you pay 10p per Megabyte plus £25 monthly sub.) which if you're only uploading & downloading small amounts could probably work out to be cheaper than just going for a full sub:

_http://www.avcbroadband.com/products/backup.aspx

However, the hardware costs £875 and installation is £250 for their Satlynx 9000 setup, so, unless you really need continuously on broadband, then I think 3G based mobile broadband really is the better option. If you have signal troubles with it, try using a fixed antenna (if the datacard can accept one) fitted outside the building.

Hope this helps...

I don't know the prices in UK, but I would investigate the 3G solution further: why not setting up a server with the 3G USB adapter on the roof? That should be better than ANY satellite connection.

The problem with satellite connections:

- the cheaper ones (still expensive) are one way only: you still need to pay the phone bill for upload
- the two-way ones are really expensive and need to be installed professionally
- either satellite solution will have a very long PING time, due to the fact that you will have to send your data back and forth to a geostationary satellite (70.000km)

I had our office connected to the internet for 2 weeks with such a 3G adapter and nobody complained (we changed building and though I did plan everything, still I lost my ADSL connection). It worked really nice and here in Portugal you get 7.2MBPS (real speed about 1MBPS) with 5GB volume per month for about 30 euro.

NO WAY you get such a price with internet over satellite!

Cheers,
vma

This is an old thread, but....

I only realized that this was possible at a relatively cheap price about six months ago. We are in the process of setting up a link between work and the boss's house, which is about 3 miles away (as the crow flies). The wireless link will then be redistributed to a few neighbors houses. The signal tests are very promising.

The boss's house is in a rural location and is too far away from the nearest exchange to get DSL.

I had been expecting an investment of 1000s for Wimax gear, but the point to point link comes in at under €500 including poles brackets etc (not counting the hardware for redistribution).

It works out very cheap in the long run, considering that no phoneline is required. The cheapest phoneline + DSL packages here cost about €50/€55 + VAT per month.

I live in an area where we have direct line of site across a bay. On the other side of the bay, there is a densely populated rural area with no access to DSL. The same goes for the mountainous areas in the other directions.

I smell an 'everybody benefits' opportunity.

I could provide wireless BB to people who have access to nothing more than Dialup for a fraction of the cost of line rental + a DSL subscription. (3G is out of the question for them too).

@dale094, In your experience, at what point do contention ratios become a problem considering that in my area, currently the highest available bandwidth is 7Mb at a contention ratio of about 24:1?

C

PS: There might be something in it for you if you can source hardware at a better rate than I'm currently getting.

pm me and maybe we could have a chat regarding your project.

the contention ratio will depend on what bandwith you have to the (AP) access point, and other factors, at 7mb i would not like to go above 10 -1

You cannot get any free internet access that way. Using certain pci satellite cards you can capture the odd data stream but they are just full of viruses and rubbish.
