laptop

can any of these receiver cards be used with a laptop? (sorry if that's been asked before, but I couldn't find a mention through the search engine).

I have a Dell inspiron 4100, and I can't find on the Dell website whether the docking staton would have a suitable PCI slot either.

Thank you,

Frazer

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

As far as i know Frazer, only the SS2 USB can be used with a laptop, you can see the unit at www.sateuropa.co.uk , not sure how it interacts with the softcam etc though.

Thanks Rolf; I hadn't seen one of those advertised anywhere. I guess, as it uses the same set up software as the normal SkyStar unit, there is a fair chance it would work with all the other software that's been developed. Trouble is, though, at £160 it's not such a cheap option!

Dead right Frazer, but i think it is mainly designed for those with only a laptop to receive satellite internet.

If only my laptop was a dell latitude, there are docking stations with PCI slots for sale on Ebay for little over £30; which, together with the normal Skystar would still be half the price of the USB version. Unfortunately, I can't find anything for my model anywhere, so I guess I'll be stuck with just the old set top box receiver for a while yet (I was mainly interested in the ability to watch 4:2:2 feeds).

I've just seen that you can get a Hauppage WinTV Nova USB version for 130 euros in Germany. (The USB version that seems to be more widely available over here is for digital terrestial TV though; markets at around £100)

You can probably buy the SS2 USB cheaper in Germany as well, it almost seems to be Euro=Pound.

Oddly, I have found very few PCI SkyStars for sale in the German online shops I have looked at (though there are a number on Ebay), and not a single usb version. On the other hand, most places seem to sell the full range of Hauppauge products. I assume, from previous posts, that the WinTV Nova works with a lot of the fancy software available, and would be suitable for 4:2:2 feeds?

Don't know about the 4:2:2 capability Frazer.

Just found some information that you can watch 4:2:2 feeds with the Hauppauge and the correct software. Might have to think about saving up and getting one bought for me next time the folks are in Germany!
