Lightbulb HDTV with DVB-S PCI card?

Hello one & All.

I think its possible to view HDTV on a PC using a DVB-S PCI card like a SkyStar 2 or a Hauppauge Nova-S with ProgDVB? Can someone confirm/deny?

Also... anyone using Linux to view HDTV on a DVB-S card?

See, in theory, as I recall, you can use a Dreambox to view HDTV if you use VLC on a PC. So as long as the PCI card will output the stream.. you should be able to do the same under Linux... but google is dry on examples!

Anyone using a PCI card to watch HDTV? If so which one?

Thanks for any help/abuse/off topic responses

Paul.

I am viewing the 3 hdtv channels on 19 east with varying success,I use nvidia pure video decoder in conjunction with a ss2 card. The mpeg2 transmissions come in ok but mpeg4 one is a little choppy. All are hoggers of bandwidth, mpeg 2 averages about 12 to 14 Mbps but mpeg4 runs nearer 20Mbps.I will be changing my vga card to an nvidia 7800 or 7900 gtx 512(if available) next month to improve things. The standard for hdtv is to be set at something called S2 for future broadcasts,so for hdtv the ones we have now will be obsolete, new ones are due out soon.

Thanks eShek... I have heard of S2 but read up to much on this. I guess thats what the QualiTV and Pace HDTV recievers support?

Be interesting if there are some Mpeg 4 PCI cards that come along that support proper S2 and HDTV...

My System: turnkey 700mhz athelon .5gb ram,120 gb,drive j-test j-tag setup

North american HDTV is bdcast using '8psk' (dvb-s2) and mpeg-2. forthcoming trend is mpeg-4 witch would require a newer decoder,(hardware or software) with improuved features and a reduced datarate
dvb-t here is mpeg-4 with excelent results.
