Signing up to Sky without having to take installation?

I am considering signing up to Sky again, and I already have a Sky Box and nice dish set up. Installation around my house is not a straight forward install, and I do not want a Sky dish on my house, hell, I don't want a Sky dish at all, I've got a perfectly adiquate dish, thank you very much.

Basically, all I want is the card, I don't want to deal with any Sky installers. Is this possible, or to get Sky is it mandatory it is installed by them?

Thanks

Ring them up and ask for a "second hand box contract"

Sky will send you a card and their ladder monkeys will never darken your doorstep.

Cheers. Also, is there any minimum term when it comes to these "second hand box contracts", and I'm assuming the pricing follows the standard Sky tariff as advertised on their website?

You may find they will try to charge you the £30 for non phoneline connection

I had ordered the full package & I told them to stuff it. They soon relented and waived the fee

Lets just clarify this - no phone line is required UNLESS multiroom is wanted - in that case the usual multiroom rules apply

It doesn't work like that. Your box constantly talks back to Sky, letting them know your viewing habits etc etc.

If the box doesn't talk to them they will soon start asking questions

Yep but those questions are after the installation fee would/should have been paid

Irrelevant, the installation is already in place. If this a single stb box in the house (and I suppose a non-recording box contract required) there is no need for a phone line on the second hand box.

Minimum 12 month conditions will apply though, which includes a full fee penalty plus costs to be debited should you fail to adhere to them.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"

Whatever it doesnt matter theres no phone line, Sky would only find that out when its been activated anyway.

They only actually care if it's multiroom.. otherwise they don't bother. I unplugged my phone line the day it was installed and never heard anything.

In another house, I even tricked Sky into installing into a property that had NO phone line.. I just fitted a phone point facia plate, and attached a 9v battery which made it look engaged. I told the Sky Engineer that BT were coming Monday

And even if you have multiroom, they send out warning letters first rather than charging.

I don't accept 'Unfair exclusions' clauses in contracts. They can pursue it if they wish. I know where I stand.

I believe so but I also believe that it is even more difficult to convince them that you don't want - or need! - the telephone connection.

I could cope with that. It was the £60 plus for the installation for existing customers that I baulked at paying

The subsidy on the Sky boxes comes from the interactive service providers (including BSKYB). In exchange for their subsidy they expect the box to be "intercative capable" (i.e. connected to a phone line) for 12 months. This is not an "unfair exclusion", if you don't like it then pay full price for your Sky box.

The problem with a non-UK card is convincing $ly that you are resident in the UK - not the country where the card is registered.

Given the fact that $ly has been cracking down on non-UK based cards I think you will have a really, REALLY hard job!

Is it possible to order a multi room sky viewing card ONLY for my spare sky satellite receiver in my bedroom without having to get an extra phone line installed and having it connected permanently?

I do not want to sign up to another new contract for 12 months. I want to be able to stop and start the multi room card whenever I want, not be stuck in a contract.

You can certainly get a Card only - But there is no way around the requirement for all multiroom Boxes to be connected to the same phone line: Its an anti-fraud measure and is actively policed. That said, quite a few people have reported that they have never so much as received a snotty warning letter despite regularly using a multiroom Card at eg a Caravan or Holiday Home.

AFAIK they won't start charging full Subs until after two warning letters have been ignored.

As for the 12 month Contract, I'm afraid you're stuck with that.

If they allowed stop/start usage, I might even have cracked myself and given myself visual access to The Ashes (Albeit I am one of those who strongly believe its a Sporting Crown Jewel and should be FTA!).

I am back from the UK where I used a friend´s phone to order a Sky contract. She said is it for this phone number and I said no and gave them a UK mobile number. I am just waiting for the cards to be sent to the UK address given. How long does it normally take for them to arrive?

Not long at all - within 3 days unless your local Postie is inclined to go on strike!
