Question Sky sports in Latvia

Hello, this is my first post! We are thinking about moving from the UK to Latvia, and wanted to know whether we could access British satellite TV from there? The official Sky line is that you can't, yet I've seen bars and pubs in Riga that advertise Sky Sports on the windows with what look like official banner ads. I would need to be able to access Sky Sports for my job, so we can't move there if we can't get it. Does anyone know if it's possible, please? Thanks!

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Their official line will always be no, even if you are simply moving across the channel to Calais.

In real terms, there are tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of Sky subscribers living and viewing outside the UK.

If you can maintain a UK address via a relative as a billing address, then you simply take your box abroad with you, what you do have to do though, is put up a big enough dish to receive the channels you require.

If you also require to watch channels on Astra 2D, like BBC and ITV, you will need a large dish, probably in excess of 2.0m (sky sports active also on this beam at the moment), for the rest, probably a 1.2m dish will suffice.

I believe that it is possible, but you will be taking a big risk.
There are many members in other countries who have a Sky Subscription through their own subscription using their home address or with the help of their family or pay more to specialists.
I can't understand why Sky makes such silly restrictions to British citizens living abroad and can't follow the Swiss example of supplying a subscription to swiss nationals abroad.
It is about time that a petetion is made on this issue.

Well I don't think it is a big risk HB, the worst that can happen is that they cancel the subscription.

The other option is to use something like a Slingbox, it needs to be hosted in the UK, somewhere with an excellent broadband up speed and the ability to have a dish to feed the Sky digibox. You then watch the TV via a PC or the new sling receiver connected to your TV over your broadband connection.

It would be taking a big risk if his job depends on it.

Ah yes I've heard of a Slingbox, although I've never seen one. Can you change the channel you're watching remotely, or do you need someone to do that where the Slingbox is?

Yes, you have full control of the box, it just sits there connected to the digibox on one side and the router on the other side.

@ HB. If wombat57 is going there anyway, then no risk involved, I have yet to hear of any of our members who have been cut off, also, much of the content is available from other providers if there are problems.

I can recommend the Sling media box for sure.
I have had one streaming for well over a year now and works a treat with 242Kbps upload speed, used daily

Thanks for those messages, very useful. Does anyone know where I can find out what channels I can get in Latvia anyway? (Sorry, I am rather new to all this!)

If you get yourself a motorised dish, then Europe is your oyster, there are quite a few satellites for you to watch and hundreds of channels, if you like sport, then you can also subscribe to something like DigitalB for their football coverage.
