My System: Sky + box
Talking Sky + in Athens, Greece

Hello All,
I know there are some previous posting about Greece, but I cant seem to find the answers I need (bit blonde I'm afraid!).
I would like to bring my sky+ box over from UK, but I dont want to bring the dish as sleeezyjet with charge me silly money.
The apartment I rent has Nova tv - can I connect the Sky box to that dish?
I read I may may not get BBC1 or ITV but at the moment all I have is BBCNews24 and I am fearing for the life of the TV if I have to watch news on a loop for much longer!
Any help is greatly appreciated as is a "man that can" who works for small euros.

Tee Hee.

Hi Jill - theres no point connecting the box to the Nova dish - the UK service uses a different set of satellites located further along the broadcasting arc.

Therefore you will need a dish installing that points at the Astra 2 cluster of satellites. You wont get the BBC or ITV services without a silly sized dish, but you should get a reasonable selection of services if your subscription is still active.

OK, thanks for that info.

Do you know the price of an Astra dish? Just a rough guess so I can rule out or not. I'm only here for 5 months so cost is important.

My System: 1m gib,1.2m precision, both motorised. tm6800 ,vantage, quali& manhattan receivers.

You could take your sky box as hand luggage at no extra charge as long as it fits in the measuring frame at the airport, ( sizes on e*syj*t site). ive done this no probs although it cuts down on the amount of other stuff you can take hand luggage.

Talking Dish

I have been quoted 350euro for dish and fitting - Analoguesat, it would be cheaper to fly you over with your dish @40euro!!!!!

It looks like a slingbox maybe the only option here - at least I can take the slingbox home with me!

Thanks for all your advice.

Eu350 sounds high unless the dish has to be in an awkward place.

I agree, the other quote I had was 450 euro. That was without them even looking. I guess it's a case of rip the Brits off!

My landlady has now increased the Nova package in the apartment so Ive got a few channels now.

I can see BBC prime etc but it wont show the channel - do you know if there is anything we can do? It's a fairly new system so I dont think it's broken.

Cheers.

Well

The problem with a sky stb is that it is designed to work only on 28.2/5 East. The internals are disabled to remove the ability to scan the numerous SR and FEC rates that are available on other satellites, this could be the reason you cannot receive BBC Prime although BBC Prime is now encrypted.

I am not able to confirm this as I do not know where your landlords dish is pointing or if it is multi lnb or not.

Not that cheap since in Athens at least a 1.20m, better 1.50m (for 24h reception of all Astra 2A/B, Eurobird 1 frequencies) is required. High prices in Greece don't just aim at Expats to rip them off, even locals that are not aware of international market prices are potential victims. There are though some good and cheap installers but you need to know where to find them.
