Telephone not recognised

Ok so two years ago we moved and having connected the Sky+ box to the telephone connection we were told that the line was not connected. It had worked perfectly before. Anyway I put it down to the modem going bang and as I didn't use it I forgot all about it.

Last week I upgraded to a Sky HD box and it too can't see the telephone line. I connected a phone to it and it works fine, I connected my laptop modem to it and it works fine, I borrowed a friends Sky+ box and it didn't see it, although it still works on his line.

So what is so special about my line? I do have ADSL but the Sky box is behind a filter and yes I have tried several filters. Any ideas?

Hi Johngp, welcome to the forum, your problem sounds very strange. Have you also tried different cables from the Sky box to the phone connection?

How many other phones do you have in the house?

Hi.

Yes I tried various cables between the telephone point and the Sky box all with the same result. I use a Digital DECT phone here with 4 handsets. The only phone points are the Master socket and this one extension socket. The wiring between the two has been checked and is per specification for an extension, i.e the wires are all in the right place. I even managed to cobble together some pre-made extension cables and plugged the Sky box into the Master socket, once again it said the telephone connection was not there!! I'm really at a loss as to why none of the Sky boxes see the telephone connection.

My System: Dreambox 7020, CM 1.2 with invacom quad c120 & channelmaster feedhorn.

If your telephone number is witheld you will have to enter 1470 in the telephone settings. Then try doing a callback. If it goes back to the menu screen then is has been sucessful or it will come up prefix failed.

OK I don't know that my number is witheld but.....

I went into the installers menu and entered 1470 under the telephone settings. Selected 'Save new settings' and I get the callback screen. Under 'Check telephone line is connected' I pressed SELECT and nothing happens. If I check on the telephone the nice posh lady is advsing me to hang up and try again. So the modem in the Sky box seems to be holding the line up but not doing anything else.

So if you do a normal system test from the services menu, does it say telephone line not connected?

If the box thinks that no phone is connected, then it shouldn't be dialling out, and so you shouldn't hear the woman telling you to try the number again.

Exactly!!!!

If I do a Systems Test it says that the telephone line is not connected. I did notice one other thing; while listening to the dial tone on the phone I plugged in the Sky box, to the telephone line and the audio level of the dial tone went down, WHY???? It shouldn't be loading the line like that for any reason.

Does anyone know the number the Sky box calls?
