Sky HD box without the HD subscription question

I was thinking about upgrading my Sky box to a + or HD. Second hand HDs look tempting, however I don't want the expense of the HD subscription. Would a SkyHD box still get BBC HD and any other free HD channels without the HD subscription to SKY? According to SKY they won't, but I don't trust sky sales men.

I have sky+hd and reduced my hd sub as the stb was causing probs as they all do after about a year.The box will act as a + box and I don't see any reason why you can't watch bbc hd as it still is an hd stb(dependant on your card)PS. Sent my box to a firm in Enniskillen for repair and has fine ever since.

A Sky HD box will receive BBC HD and LUXE HD without a card, and Channel Four HD with a free to view card.
It won't record without an active sub, however.
Sky try to pretend BBC HD is part of their own HD mix.
Early Thomson HD boxes all have the PSU problem, which is well documented. Most fail after 1-2 years.
