My System: Dreambox 7020Si receiver, PLi image loaded and Irdeto and Viaccess cards installed. Dishes for Nilesat + Hotbird with lnb's for BADR and Eurobird 9
Is SKY-HD worth it??

I am thinking of installing SKY and the HD box at GBP49 with free installation sounds like a good deal.

BUT does the quality of the programmes justify it?

Are they real HD programmes or just normal ones on an HD feed?

At present I have FreeView with a 32" LCD JVC and the picture quality is pretty good.
Will I gain anything with HD??

Thanks

I think you will find that the offer is only valid in the UK, which is not what your profile indicates, but in my opinion it is an offer that will attract few people, I personally could not afford a new TV and the extra for HD

I am in the UK at the moment, for a few months.

The offer is only valid until 26th March and the HD channels are GBP9.75 a month
but I would not need Knowledge as that is covered on HD.
So the first month is GBP17.50 and subsequent months GBP27.25.

We have the HD TV, so no expense there.

This is the crux of my question.
Not subjective quality, but TECHNICAL.............

Technically the only programs that can be broadcast in true HD and not upscaled are current outside broadcasts and some films, but the economic downturn is sure to have reduced the pace of HD uptake in both reception terms and broadcast terms. As a large proportion of television is based upon repeats I can never see a situation when all broadcasting is in HD.

If you are asking is it technically worth it switching to HD I can only say that it has to be for the furtherment of entertainment systems and general R&D within the industry, doesn't mean that paupers like me will go and buy it though

My System: Mostly gathering dust cos there's no room for dishes here... :(

The Sleepy Hollow pollracle has spoken!

I have to say that as an SD CRT TV owner, watching some of the channels sky broadcast in HD (especially the new HD Simpsons), there's no point in upgrading, the image quality, at least on VirginMedia, is fine, SD is high enough quality for me, heck I bet if we still had it in the UK (I think somewhere in Ireland it is still in use) I'd be happy with 405 line VHF!!!

As long as I can see the picture, I'm not fussed if it has billions of different shades of colour, a higher pixel resolution or whatever, as long as the image doesn't pixellate or break up, I'm happy...

Minimum contract is 12 months, you must have a land based telephone line (near the box position) and the freebies are only available if the installation is quick and easy.

So what remains for you now is , does the additional annual outlay justify a pixel improvement of some 30 or so channels on your screen.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
