My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

Yes, you will need a card if you are not going down the cardshare route.

The card will need to be activated in a genuine Sky digibox.

The FTV card will be good enough for the FTV channels, Five, Channel 4, Sky 3, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to answer just one more thing, if she has a sub to sky and sends me the card is that a better route than her getting a ftv card for me. (I am assuming that she will be able to get a replacement card from sky for herself then)

My System: Dreambox with PLi-Emerald 1.09 image, Matrix revolution CAS, newcamd emu, movable dish 0.85 m, very happy indeed

if she gets a replacement card for herself, then your card will no longer be updated by Sky. You will be able to watch all the channels that card is entitled to until the day that the validation dates on that card run out. From that day on, you will only be able to see the FTV channels.
now, to answer your question : yes, as it will allow you to see many more channels for a few weeks, until the card is switched off.

My System: Sky UK. FTA analogue & digital satellite from 6 fixed dishes (5E/7E/9E/10E/13E/16E/ 19E/23E/28E) Pace MSS100, Echostar IP3000VA, Technomate TM-1000D, Dreambox 7020S

If friend gets another (replacement? - my dog chewed it type of thing) then the first card will immediately be totally deactivated and will only be of any use as an ice scraper

Friend will need to get a second full subscription card not a replacement

are you sure ? I thought all yellow house cards would continue to function as a FTV card, no matter what happens to the original subscription.....

Not if they completely turn it off, which they'll probably do with a lost or damaged card.
