My System: Sky+
No Signal while Recording on Sky+

Hi guys,
I will start this off with an apology for my lack of general knowlege...

I had Sky installed for the very 1st time in September whilst living in a block of flats with a communal dish.

Not had an hours bother with it at all... until... I moved into a house.

It is still a communal dish owned by "duh management" and it has lots of wires attached to it - a big bunch in fact. (whether they are 1 per house of more, I really can't confirm)

when I hit record it showed as recording (as per the red light), but at the end of the programme it said "Clashed" and the record didn't work.

I was purely watching a channel whilst recording another, not trying to do too much.

The main problem is that when it is recording - other channels state "No Satellite Signal is Being Received".

there are 2 wall sockets for sky - both of which are plugged in. Did a system healthcheck and there are 2 signals being received although took a while (30 seconds) for the 2nd signal to show.

I thought "fair enough - not set up for sky+"... until last night when I was recording a programme and flicked over to another channel and after a few seconds the "No Satellite Signal is Being Received" message disappeared and it was working as it should!

Is this a common thing? where in certain areas the 2nd signal is intermittent or takes a while to get the 2nd signal through?

Once again sorry for my lack of technical expertise/knowlege but I really appreciate your time to read this and I hope someone can help me as we have an engineer booked and if it's not a problem with the box, they'll charge me £65 and I want to know if I should be cancelling him or not...

Thanks again

Sounds like there is some thing not quite right with one of your 2 feeds,
try swapping over the 2 cables so one is on two etc.. and then see what that gives you.

There sould only be 4 wires off the dish feeding a multi switch somewhere with in your building, so i would speak with the management people to see if the can move your 2 cables to a different socket on the switch too see if the that will solve it if there are some free sockets that is.

Hi guys, Thanks for the quick responses - massively appreciated!

when I swapped the cables round in the back of the box, it had no signal - Was the same as the channel change whilst recording message.

I checked the copper parts inside the cables and they are straight as an arrow as they should be.

The management guys have said that it's not set up for sky+
But how was I able to record and watch different programs last night???

It makes no sense at all

Well

There could in all honesty be a number of different scenarios taking place depending on what has been wired up in the first place.

The clue to the solution is in the fact that the management have already stated that it is not set up for sky+. Rather than trying to fix something that is not broken, you should be spending your time speaking to management and asking the first question which is, if it is not set up for sky + why are there two outlets on the wall plate?. The second question being when are you going to make that facility available?

The effect you describe is not possible to diagnose remotely and would more than likely require an engineer with a spectrum analyser to determine what has been set up and what is happening

Thanks to all who have replied,
and thanks for making it easy to understand, too!

I'll get on to the management and see what they have to say for themselves. Even though they say it's not set up for sky+, it baffles me as to why it worked last night for an hour...

i'll try to count the wires out of the dish, is that the "LNB"s?
4 for plus and 2 for standard?

If I don't get the success with management, might not be worthwhile getting an engineer out as I have no idea where the multiswitch may be. Asking an engineer to fix/look at something that I don't know where it is hidden may well be a fruitless exercise...

Its possible the second socket is wired as a loop through into another room rather than being connected to the multiswitch.

Whilst its difficult to diagnose something like this Id say you only have one live feed. You will be able to record if the channel is on the same polarity and band as the one you are watching.

Which channel were you watchng and which one were you recording?

Watching BBC2 and recording ITV.

Is there a comprehensive list of same polarity channels if this is the case?

called sky cust services and they talked me through a healthcheck signal test and both signals had a reading but the 2nd signal took 30 seconds to give a reading...

thanks

have a look here, _ttp://www.lyngsat.com/astra2d.html both itv yorks and bbc2 are on a H transponder it could be possable, but as others have said its hard to tell without looking and i would guess you have only 1 connection to the switch and the second connection u have could go to another room or be used for some thing else ie a cable connection.

Also if it should give you a reading strate away on the second tuner .
